Executive Report

As we move through Week 4 we note that it is now the last 3 days of the HSC. I want to congratulate Year 12 on the way on which they have conducted themselves. Our HSC supervisors have been full of praise for the maturity and respectful attitude. Sign-out for Year 12 is Monday morning. Their celebration of the end of schooling is marked at their Formal next week. We wish all our graduates the best for their final HSC marks and their plans for 2025 and the future.Ms Archer had the pleasure of attending the Sydney Southwest Symphonic Wind Ensemble concert last Sunday at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. It was a fantastic showcase of music and Ms Archer was very proud of Isolde Taylor's presentation in this elite ensemble.

We are now moving into the assessment phase of Term 4. Homework club runs on Monday and Wednesday after school in the library. This program is a great resource for studying and review of work. Evidence on learning strongly shows that regular time reviewing and practising skills is the best way to retrieve knowledge and improve your results. Your child's assessments can be tracked through the Sentral app and we have provided a tip sheet in this edition to assist you to navigate this app.

IEF News

Our IEF SRC representatives—Ethan, Aiden, James, and Sasha—showed off their Halloween spirit by dressing up and helping run the bake sale at our Halloween Mufti Day. On Monday, they baked delicious chocolate brownies to contribute, and they enjoyed serving many enthusiastic customers, including Mielle, Harper, and Emer. The whole IEF joined in the fun, with live bands, a sausage sizzle, and plenty of Halloween festivities to celebrate the day. Thank you to the SRC team for helping make this event a spooky success!

International Mining and Resources Conference Excursion

Ms Chapman had a great day this week with a group of year 9 students at the International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC). This is a space where some of the most influential people in the mining industry connect to share ideas. Students learnt lots and were amazed by the range of career opportunities offered in the industry. 

Ecology Symposium

This week, SRC members Elyse, Hugh, Emma, Isla and Olivia attended Waverley College’s inaugural Ecology Symposium. The event offered students the unique opportunity to network with other schools and engage with a range of guest speakers.

The day started off with presentations by Uncle Dean Kelly and Mr Geoff Lui who shared valuable insight on how the Traditional Custodians have lived harmoniously with our land, sea and skies for thousands of years and how climate change is threatening this way of life.

We continued to hear from Environmental activist, Mr Costa Georgiadis, who engaged the students with thought provoking questions and storytelling to highlight the significant impact consumerism has on our local environment, especially when companies are not using sustainable practices.

Lastly, students heard from a number of Local and Federal Members of Parliament including Majorie O’Neill and Allegra Spender. A special part of the day was the opportunity for students to use their voice to advocate for change in their local areas. Olivia and Isla volunteered to read their letter in front of fellow students and council members, passionately advocating for Australian chocolate corporations to find more sustainable alternatives for packaging, more specifically the ‘fun sized’ chocolates and lollies packets.

The Ecology Symposium was a great opportunity for our Rose Bay students and a reminder of the importance of student voice.

Defence Force work experience

Elise in Year 10 recently had the amazing opportunity to crew the Mexican Navy’s Tall Ship - ARM Cuauhtémoc. She then had some great workplace learning with a week's Defence Force work experience at HMAS Albatross. If you are keen to explore the world of work - be sure to talk to Ms Lockton, the careers teacher at RBSC.

RBSC Annual Chess Competition

Careers News

Software Engineering Class

Software Engineering and Entrepreneurial Students were inspired today by a presentation from 2020 Alumni Luke O'Malley who is working on a Careers Chat Bot program. Students were interested in both the results (what career they could pursue) and the actual coding along with the entrepreneurial skills of converting and idea into marketable product. 

Senior Student Seminars

To help both students and parents navigate the upcoming HSC journey, we invite Year 10 & 11 (new Year 12) students and their parents to our free November kickstart seminars, with our partners Macquarie University, UTS and the University of Newcastle.

For nearly twenty years, these seminars have provided valuable insights and practical tips for students entering their HSC years, as well as guidance for parents on how to best support their children during this critical time.

The sessions will be delivered by qualified counsellors and experienced HSC markers, covering the following topics:

• Managing stress during assessments and exams

• Secrets to HSC success: insights from the marking centre

• Understanding the ATAR: what you need to know

• English tips and tricks for Advanced & Standard students

• Strategies for parents: how to provide academic & emotional support

Apply to join the DOVES Council

Applications for the DOVES Minister’s Student Council are open for 2025. The Minister's Student Council, known as the Department of Student Voices in Education and Schools (DOVES), is an initiative of the NSW Government to ensure student voices are heard in developing education policy and addressing matters of concern to students.

In October 2020 a student steering committee was formed to help co-design the council. The result is DOVES a 27-member council representing students from all Operational Directorates across NSW, including Connected Communities, who advocate on behalf of their school communities.

The P&C informally runs a WhatsApp group via year.

If anyone would like to join their child’s WhatsApp group, please feel free to send an email to Nadia.kaye2@det.nsw.edu.au to be included.

It is a great way to connect with other parents and guardians of students in the same year as your child.  The WhatsApp groups are used to distribute information, ask questions to see if anyone else has the same problems.

School of Languages

Under the Windows that overlook the Harbour, our School of Languages distance education students sit. It’s a silent area, but a beautiful space for our SOL students to study. If you are studying a language, you will be asked to sit in this space. Ms Lawson is Head of Languages at RBSC.

NSW School of Languages is a public specialist school, with speciality in teaching languages via distance education, located in Petersham. The school is operated by the New South Wales Department of Education. Go to the SOL website to access the career newsletter and to read about the benefits of studying languages.

Be Creative

To spark your creativity, we have set up a special Picture Book Display in the library.

A picture book can be a powerful stimulus for writing, whether in prose or rhyme, want to know the difference? Ask at the front desk.

Reading a picture book might prompt a great idea for an English creative piece of writing. If you need help with starting a piece of writing, please come in and chat.

We are also looking to encourage:

1. Cards, Uno, Board Game Fun; register re Monopoly and Chess Championships

2.Colouring. Encouraging students to colour and illustrate, during the Breaks; also, to use the white board tables to play 'Battleship' etc. So come in and relax, it’s your space!

An important part of being an effective student is being able to take notes.

Cornell Note Taking is one way of managing note taking. Please see me at the desk if you need some help.

Meaning of Note Making

Making notes is the activity of keeping records from many sources. It is more than just writing down what you hear or see. Note taking is a more cerebral activity than note taking because it requires you to choose, analyse; and summarise what you hear and read. Making notes is thus an active way of study because it requires you to think because you must make decisions about what you write.

Mindfulness – Senior Students esp. New Year 12 students…

Another important aspect of schooling is mindfulness. Please join us Tuesday mornings (Senior study space) for some tips on meditation and managing stress.

The RBSC Junior Book Club is set, our next meeting is next Friday 25th and then 27th and then every fortnight.

We will place a notice on TEAMs calling for volunteers. PLEASE LOOK TO YOUR TEAMS PAGE AND MAKE APPLICATION… OR COME IN AND SEE US AT THE FRONT DESK.

We are encouraging students who would like experience in ‘Display’ to join our growing number of volunteers. If you are interested in Window Display, Book Display, Wall display, then a career in Visual Merchandising, might be for you. TAFE has a Certificate in Visual Merchandising, ask at the library front desk; experience in the library can be a fabulous pathway; volunteering in the library is great to add to your resume. Please see the Library Front Desk if you would like to volunteer or if you need some help writing a Resume

Year 7 Fast Track is BACK!

Starting Week 2, Term 2 2024 at 8:00am-8:50am in B502

Fast Track Literacy and Numeracy classes are open to all students who wish to receive some extra help with literacy and numeracy skills and content. Fast Track is a foundation class that is highly structured and aligns with the current content being taught in Year 7 English and Maths classes. It is highly structured and aims to build the foundations of the skills and content being taught in classes currently. The Literacy class and Numeracy class will run at the same time. If you would prefer your child have both literacy and numeracy support then they can alternate between the classes every 2 weeks. Every 2 weeks equals a new learning cycle. This class is FREE and open to all Year 7 students.

WAYS Open Day

This is an opportunity for you to find out what WAYS Youth Training is up to and how we are skilling and preparing young people for employment. We have some exciting new initiatives in the works as well as our all our existing training programs.

You will hear from some of our students talking about their experience at WAYS and we will be providing light refreshments after the presentations. This invitation is open to all prospective students, case workers, teachers, family, well anyone really.

Date and Time: The Open Day will run from 12:00 pm until 2:00pm on the 14th November.

Centre 360 is hosting an engaging webinar for parents raising teenagers. Delivered by Centre 360 adolescent and family counsellors, this webinar will present on adolescent development, its impacts on the teen/parent relationship, why the connection is fundamental to navigating the teenage years, and how to remain connected with your teen/s during this significant time of change in their lives.

Ocean Lovers Festival Competition

Fish Tank Guidelines  

Fish Tank is a competition for high school students from years 7-12 to Inspire, Engage and Empower youth and give them a voice to help solve a problem impacting the ocean. 

We are fishing for the next generation of good ideas to help the ocean by giving a platform for students to share their innovative ideas that push the boundaries to positively impact ocean health and turn ripples of action into waves of change.  

Selected Finalist may have the opportunity to talk and answer questions live on stage or to share their Fish Tank idea and pitch at the Ocean Lovers Festival March 23rd, 2025. There may also be additional presentation opportunities. You will be notified via email if you are selected for these opportunities.  

The Winners will win a share in the $10,000 prize pool and the opportunity to be mentored to further develop their idea. 

Prize Money will be split into three categories:  

Senior Prize winner (Yr 10-12) - $5,000  

Junior Prize Winner (Yr 7-9) - $3,000  

People’s Choice Winner - $2,000  

Participating students will create and record a pitch for an eco-friendly idea that they would like to develop further. Themes include but are not limited to: 

• Science / Technology 

• Innovation 

• Activism /Movement /Awareness 

• Business  

• School initiative

    Your Submission will include: 

    A Video Pitch 

    Create your 1-minute video pitch to captivate our judges and the public and sell your idea to help the ocean. Focus on your idea and how to best inform and engage us in your pitch. It is important to consider what you want your audience to Think, Feel and Do when watching your video.  

    Think of creating your 1- minute video like a preview trailer for a movie, we want to be excited and interested about your video, idea and concept. Be creative, engaging and theatrical, so we are hungry to know more. 

    Please note that your video may be selected to feature on the Ocean Lovers Festival social channels and other media channels at the discretion of the competition organisers.

    Video Pitch Criteria  

    • Videos must focus on addressing and selling an idea that supports the ocean and will inspire positive change, with a clear call to action. 
    • Videos must be no longer than 1 minute, no larger than 500 Mb and must be filmed in horizontal (landscape) format. 
    • Video submissions can be created by one person, or as a team. 
    • All video content must be your own original work. 

    30 Second Social Media Reel 

    Create a 30 second Social Media reel that focuses on drawing in an audience, this video would be the prelude to your 1-minute video. Your aim is to get likes and followers.  

    You want people to be interested in your 30 sec social media reel. Draw them in by highlighting your captivating idea in a snapshot and aim for them to want to know more about your great idea for the ocean. Be fun, creative and capture your audience.  

    30 second video criteria 

    • Video must be filmed in portrait (dimensions 1080x1920) 
    • No longer than 30 second 
    • Minimum of 1080p resolution  

    Vision Statement 

    Include a Vision Statement of 500 – 1000 words outlining what your idea is and how it will address a problem impacting the ocean? You may include information about how you envision developing and marketing this idea and why you think it’s important to tackle this challenge. Remember that your Vison Statement will be supporting your video pitch idea. 

    Things to consider but not mandatory to include: 

    • Hook: Start with a captivating opening line or question to grab attention. 
    • Problem Statement: Clearly define the problem or pain point your idea addresses. 
    • Solution: Introduce your unique idea and how it solves the identified problem. 
    • Benefit: Highlight the key advantages and positive outcomes your solution offers.
