From The Senior Executive
School Attendance
Some parents/carers would have been receiving letters in regard to their child’s attendance recently. The school Senior Executive would like to reinforce the fact that the reason behind these letters is the wellbeing of all students at the school. The letters are sent out in adherence to the Department of Education policy and are designed to inform of attendance concerns that the school may have.
As an executive, we appreciate your support and understanding in our efforts to keep our students’ wellbeing a high priority.
Subject Selection
Upcoming Webinars
Monday 27 June Year 8 Parent Webinar 5:00pm.
Year 10 Parent Webinar 6:00pm.
You will have been emailed the links for these. Please contact the school office if you have not received the link.
Selections will close Wednesday 20 July, 4:00pm.
Please note that subjects are not compiled on a first in first served basis. We form the subject after all selections are entered so it is important to take to time to choose your senior courses based on the individual students’ interests and strengths.
ICAS Assessment 2022
Rose Bay Secondary College will be participating in the ICAS Assessments this year for Year 7 to 10 students. ICAS is designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science and Writing. Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition and development. Every student will receive a printed certificate and an online results report.
The assessments are suitable for students wishing to extend themselves academically and take up the personal challenge of competing in an international assessment, that has been running for 40 years. Your child will be presented with high-quality, expert-developed questions, allowing them to apply their learning without the need for prior study or revision.
ICAS Assessments are now online, a move that reflects a sector-wide transition to online assessments. This allows greater accessibility for students and faster delivery of results. Learn more about ICAS online.

Pride Month
Midford Holiday Trading Hours
Athletics Carnival
On Tuesday 14 June, RBSC students attended the annual athletics carnival at Erskineville Oval. Well done to all students who participated and those who have advanced to the next stage.
Alumni Visit
In term 2 we had a visit from alumni June Harrington who graduated as School Captain in 1946. June was shown around the school to see how things have changed since she attended Rose Bay Secondary College 76 years ago.
During June’s schooling, the campus consisted of A Block building only. She commented on how the school has grown and improved.
We received this message from June’s son Peter about the experience
"Thanks so much for organising a tour of my mother’s old school. She was absolutely thrilled to have a look around and to see her name on the honour board. Reminiscing about her experiences at the school and of the time was quite the emotional time for her."
Year 12 Visit to UTS
A group of Year 12 students visited UTS on Wednesday 22 June to hear from organisations including Animal Logic, Adobe, Microsoft, Wisetech Global, Woolworths, Westpac, Defence Force Recruiting, Avanade Australia, TCS & loads more to learn where a career in tech can take you.
Victory in Premier's Debating Challenge
Our Year 8 Team (Yoshi, Olivia , Felix and Shiri) represented RBSC in debating on Thursday morning. RBSC was successful against Randwick Girls High School, and students were commended for their first-rate speaking skills, strong arguments and comprehensive rebuttals.
This team debated in the affirmative stance in response to the topic 'it should be mandatory to provide classes about technology use for Australians over the age of 60'.
Our Year 8 team should be incredibly proud of their efforts and dedication to the debating program at this school.
HSC Industrial Technology Timber
Students have been busy working on their HSC major practical projects under the guidance of Mr Braid and Mr Waugh. There is an interesting range of projects currently at various stages of their development. Year 12 student Will's hollow surfboard features technology reminiscent of an airplane wing. The surfboard's internal structure features approximately 16 ribs spaced along a central spar which creates the cross-sectional profile of the surfboard. The surfboard's top skin is made of 5 pieces of Paulownia timber glued edge to edge, each separated by a strip of Merbau timber. Will has devoted many hours outside of class and has become a resident of the woodwork workshops.
Eden's solid timber chair is deceptively difficult having subtle out-of-square angles in the seat box's frame. The backrest is angled and has a concave profile making this chair's degree of difficulty to the next level. The chair will have a soft upholstered seat and will feature intricate detail, added to the backrest's centre square. Nicola has custom made a laminated plywood sheet, forming and gluing the layers over a mold to create the feature curve of her Low-rise Cabinet.
In future weeks we'll show you other student projects which include musical instruments and a Memphis Design bookcase made from cardboard boxes.
News from the Music Ensemble Program
Congratulations to everyone who played at the mid-year concerts last Wednesday and Thursday nights. All the bands and ensembles sounded fantastic and it was so good to hear them perform in front of a crowd again. Thanks to Murray, Sean, Mel and all the ensemble conductors and tutors for their efforts in getting the bands and ensembles ready. Thanks also to everyone who supported our very successful fundraising raffles or donated on the night. Special thanks to First Education tutoring for their very generous donation of two $450 vouchers for 5 sessions of tutoring as well as to Bunnings at Rose Bay, Anna McFarlane and Allen & Unwin, and Woolworths for donating prizes.
If you’d like to be part of a band it’s not too late to join MEP. Check out the MEP website for more information or contact us by email.
Library Update
This week there are two very important announcements.
- How the RBSC library can assist our HSC students.
- Announcing a reading competition for the most read books in a term.
As we approach the end of the school term, the joy of holidays is being replaced by trepidation and nerves for many of the HSC students. Final exams which were once a date in the far future are fast approaching, and with it, lots of uncertainty with regards to the amount of study, and all the information that needs to be learned.
So how can we best help and assist HSC students? Sorry we can’t learn the material for you, we would if we could… no that’s not true …, but we do have a shelfful of new HSC textbooks, study guides and study materials, in the exchange area (the green chair area) and they are borrowed for a Seven day period, and are waiting to be borrowed. Many HSC students already make use of this significant resource, but there are enough books to be used by many more students. We have you covered and wish all HSC students happy and successful studying days and nights on this last high school leg.
Any student needing assistance need only ask at the desk as we are here to help.
RBSC Reading Competition.
You are all aware that the PRC (Premiers Reading Challenge), or I hope you are, is still well underway which encourages you to read specific books for the challenge. For the coming term this competition will run concurrently with a new Library initiative. A prize will go to the 3 top readers per term, and will run from week Ten (this week) to week Nine next term, and each term thereafter. Winners will be announced in this column in week 10 of each term. For those students reading books for the PRC competition, your reading for this period, will also count towards the library competition. All students need to do, is register their intention to join the RBSC Library Reading Competition and, on returning each book please see the Librarian at the desk to get a short form to fill out about the book you are returning. The prizes to be won will be announced during a presentation at the school assembly on Tuesday. Happy reading everyone!
Remember the last week of school for the term is next week so all borrowing for the holidays needs to be done this coming week.
A reminder that every Monday and Wednesday from 3:30–5:00pm the library becomes a homework hub to assist any and all students with research, homework, assignments, and any studying issues they may need assistance with.
RBSC P&C School Building Fund End of Financial Year Appeal
What does the Building Fund do?
The Building Fund aims to help improve RBSC facilities by funding permanent fixtures, fittings and building works that go above and beyond the priority items funded by the Department of Education.
The Building Fund recently contributed to a significant school infrastructure project. The permanent shade fixture currently being installed over the basketball courts on the top oval will provide an additional all-weather outdoor sports facility, as well as additional shade for students.
How to donate?
Please visit the RBSC P&C website to donate to the Building Fund. Donations are tax deductible.
With your tax deductible donation, the RBSC P&C Building fund will be in a strong position to assist with future building/infrastructure projects that will benefit students and the community.
The Rose Bay Secondary College Parents & Citizens’ Association School Building Fund has been endorsed as a tax-deductible gift recipient by the Australian Taxation Office. Donations to the fund may be deductible. For further information please read Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) information before making a gift.
