Executive Report
Bullying No Way! National Week of Action
This week, our school has actively been participating in the Bullying No Way! National Week of Action, a significant nationwide initiative aimed at creating safe and supportive learning environments where all students can thrive.
Anti-Bullying Assembly Recap
On Wednesday, we held a highly successful Anti-Bullying Assembly where our staff engaged in impactful role plays to demonstrate key behaviors in bullying situations. The scenarios showcased what it means to walk away from a bullying incident and, more importantly, what it looks like to be an Upstander. These demonstrations provided clear examples for our students, setting the expectation that when bullying occurs, at the very least, they should walk away, and at best, take a stand as an Upstander.
HSC Dance Friday 16th August
The HSC Dance performance on Friday was a resounding success, showcasing the hard work and talent of our students. A special thank you to Deb Cave and Kelly Vine for their exceptional coordination of this event.
HSC Trials end Monday
The HSC Trials conclude on Monday, marking the end of a smoothly run examination period. A huge thank you goes to Mrs. Christy Godby for her outstanding organisation and leadership, as well as to all the invigilators for their dedication. Our students have been exemplary, demonstrating excellent behaviour throughout the trials.
A Community United in Support
Recently, two of our former students tragically lost their mother, leaving them to navigate life on their own at the ages of 18 and 25. In the face of such a profound loss, the community has come together to wrap these young men in support and care.
At the wake, held this week, the strength of our school community was on full display. Each of these boys was surrounded by no fewer than 15 of their close friends, a powerful testament to the bonds forged during their school years. The theme of the gathering was community, and it was heartening to see a large group of friends, including those who graduated in 2023 and 2017, rallying around them in their time of need.
What made the event even more special was the presence of many RBSC parents, who also attended to offer their support. One parent was instrumental in organising the wake, ensuring that the boys were surrounded by love and care during such a difficult time.
This overwhelming support is a reminder that our school community is more than just a place of learning—it's a lifelong network of care and connection. We are proud to see our former students and parents embody these values, standing by these young men with such strength and compassion.
Explicit Teaching Professional Learning, Let there be Light!
This week Rose Bay Secondary College hosted the Explicit Teaching Professional Learning, Let there be Light! through the Burbangana Leadership Network. Burbangana is a Dharug word of the Sydney language meaning “take my hand and help me up”. It speaks to the collegiality of public schools and teachers' commitment to student growth and improvement.
The day celebrated explicit teaching practice in our schools. Over 80 leaders from both primary and secondary schools attended the day and engaged in meaningful discussion and learning from exemplary practitioners. This included Principal Manisha Gazula presentation of ‘The Marsden Way’ and Explicit Instruction and Principal Damien Fenely in The Science of Learning. RBSC also showcased some of our explicit teaching methods and high impact teachers. Head Teacher Teaching and Learning Anna Buckley presented The Seldon Method; Bubble Writing and (rel) Head Teacher Teaching and Learning Jess Gray and Literacy Team member Dayne Stanger delivered a session on Cornell Notetaking.
We wish to thank the P&C for their support by supplying morning tea for this event and the RBSC staff who helped make the day a great success
IEF News
This past week, the IEF students took part in an engaging and meaningful activity to deepen their understanding of bullying and the importance of being an upstander. Using the online application Paint, each student created powerful visual responses that reflected their learning and personal insights on the topic. Through their artwork, students expressed their thoughts on standing up against bullying and promoting kindness and inclusion. The project not only fostered creativity but also encouraged important conversations about empathy and courage within our school community. We're proud of the thoughtful work our students have produced, showcasing their commitment to making our school a safe and supportive environment for everyone.
Check-in assessment for Years 7, 8 and 9
Dear parents and carers,
During Term 3 Week 5, students will participate in the Check-in assessment.
The Check-in assessment is a NSW Department of Education online literacy and numeracy assessment available to support schools to assess and monitor student learning.
The assessment can supplement existing school practices to identify how students are performing in literacy and numeracy and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs. Students with disability may receive the same level of support during the assessment they would normally receive in the classroom.
- The assessment will be scheduled for Years 7, 8 and 9 students during Week 5.
- All students complete a reading assessment and a numeracy assessment.
- The assessment has been scheduled during English and Mathematics classes.
Student Requirements
Students must bring a fully charged laptop during Week 5.
Headphones, earphones, or earbuds are optional. All information is provided in a visual format, so headphones are not necessary unless students require them for their vision or reading comprehension.
If a student is absent on the day, we will arrange catch up assessments later in Week 5.

Every year since 1945 CBCA Children's Book Week has brought children and books together across Australia.
Book Week has had a slogan since 1945, but until 1987 each branch created their own posters to illustrate the themes and promote events. There has been a national theme since 1987.
Traditionally, but not always, the Book Week artwork is developed by the winner of the previous year's Picture Book of the Year Illustrator.
Take a look at past CBCA Book Week themes. https://cbca.org.au/cbca-book-week-resources/
Book Week is an opportunity for all students at RBSC to seek out the magic that is reading. Make it something for you to do for you. Reading can transform your life even if it is for short periods. You can be transported to wonderful places, meet exciting, stimulating characters and feel tremendous thrills or scare your socks off. Participate in the celebration of reading. If you feel you have never really found a novel that really transported, you…it’s because you have not met the right book yet! Come into the Library and chat, we will find you the one!
