Why Choose Public Education?
From the Principal's Desk
Our staff had a fantastic Professional Learning day, reviewing and applying our intensive reading strategies to classroom programs as part of our literacy plan. Staff also reviewed the Anti Bullying policy and used HSC RAP data to inform the refinement of our Trial Examinations. The morning tea provided by our P&C was gratefully received and a big thank you to our community for this.
Over the next two weeks we will be welcoming new staff to the College. Julian Floriano will be taking over the Deputy Principal from August 5. Julian comes to us from the Cowpastures network with great experience in leading curriculum and overseeing wellbeing. His network has a reputation for excellence in innovating through collaboration and Julian is very excited to be joining the Rose Bay Secondary College team. Cody Brown will be commencing on August 12 as our permanent Visual Art Teacher and will be visiting this week to meet his colleagues and start planning.
It was a pleasure and a privilege to be part of every Year assembly last week. I am very proud of the sheer number of students receiving silver and gold awards and recognition for their commitment and work. My address to all students centered on the year's theme of Connect, Care and Courage in learning and interacting with each other and our community.
Term 3 is always busy with exams and submission of HSC works and practical exams. Congratulations to all our HSC Visual arts students who submitted their Body of Work this morning and we wish our Dance students well as they prepare for the first HSC exam on Friday August 16.
Subject Selection links have gone out for Year 8 and 10. I encourage all parents to support their child in this decision making as these choices will set subjects for the next two years of study. Don't hesitate to contact year advisors and teachers for information in supporting your child's decisions.
Year 7 – 11 Celebration Assemblies
This week, Years 7 – 11 were officially welcomed back to Semester 2 with their Celebration Assemblies. These assemblies, led by their Year Advisers, celebrated achievement across this year with many students receiving silver and gold awards to mark their consistent engagement. There was a focus on continuing to sustain and celebrate RBSC’s culture of high expectations with students invited to embrace academic challenge consistently within the classroom. During the assemblies, students experienced impressive dance and music performances from their peers as well as addresses from our School Leadership Team, Year Advisers and the SRC. Students in Years 7 - 11 are commended for their responsible and respectful behaviour during our Celebration Assemblies.
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data
All schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) each year. The process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019). All students who receive additional support at school are included in this process. The data is provided in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. If you have any questions about this process, please contact the school office to talk to Ms Wood who coordinates the process.
Bastille Day
In 1789 the poor of Paris, the ‘Sans Culottes’, rose up and stormed a huge prison called the ‘Bastille’ as a symbol of the cruelty of King Louis XVI the reigning monarch at the time.
Every year, France’s National Day or ‘Bastille Day’ is celebrated on the 14th of July to mark the day that King Louis XV1 and his Queen Antoinette were overthrown in the French Revolution. Adults and children all over France have this day off work and school to celebrate this important occasion.
At RBSC all of the students studying French held their own Bastille Day celebrations in
Week 10 of Term 2, on the 2nd and 3rd of July, just prior to going on school holidays.
Our class was escorted to the teachers’ Common Room and invited to enjoy traditional French foods, such as warm plain and chocolate croissants, melted cheese and bacon rolls and lots of creamy Le Conquerant Camembert cheese generously donated by Archie’s parents from 7E. Steaming hot chocolates and teas accompanied these treats whilst students ate and talked overlooking the beautiful view of Sydney Harbour, with ambient French music playing in the background. Before ravenously devouring the treats, two students delivered a short presentation about the special holiday.
The students enjoyed their time together as a class, taking a break from learning the French language, and allowing them to taste the food of the culture they were studying.
We are all very grateful for the hard work put in by Ms Ayscough.

It's Children’s Book Week in the library 17-23 August- Every year since 1945 CBCA Children's Book Week has brought children and books together across Australia.
Book Week has had a slogan since 1945, but until 1987 each branch created their own posters to illustrate the themes and promote events. There has been a national theme since 1987.
Traditionally, but not always, the Book Week artwork is developed by the winner of the previous year's Picture Book of the Year Illustrator.
Take a look at past CBCA Book Week themes. https://cbca.org.au/cbca-book-week-resources/
Book Week is an opportunity for all students at RBSC to seek out the magic that is reading. Make it something for you to do for you. Reading can transform your life even if it is for short periods. You can be transported to wonderful places, meet exciting, stimulating characters and feel tremendous thrills or scare your socks off. Participate in the celebration of reading. If you have never got into a novel…it’s because you have not met the right book yet! Come into the Library and chat, we will find you the one!
