Executive Report
Subject Selection Evening Success for Years 8 and 10
It was wonderful to see so many of you in attendance at the Year 8 and Year 10 Subject Information Session. Your presence and participation were truly appreciated as we navigated through important decisions regarding choosing Stage 5 and Stage 6 electives.
The evening was designed to provide crucial information and insights to assist students in making informed choices that align with their academic goals and future aspirations. We trust that you found the sessions insightful and helpful in clarifying the pathways available and the criteria for subject selection.
A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated teachers who played a pivotal role in the success of the evening. Their commitment to providing detailed information and answering your questions was invaluable. Their expertise and enthusiasm significantly contributed to making the event both informative and engaging.
Next Steps
Students will be emailed information on how to choose their subjects on Monday, 29th July (Term Three, Week 2). It is very important for students to list their subjects in order of preference. Please note, there is no “first in, best dressed”; all submissions are treated the same to ensure fairness. Both parents and students have been emailed:
- A copy of the PowerPoint presentation
- A copy of the Stage Curriculum Booklet
We encourage you to review these materials thoroughly to aid in making well-informed decisions. Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our teaching staff who are always here to support you.
Thank you once again for your active participation and continued support in making our school community thrive.
Reports
By the end of today, parents will be emailed Semester One reports for Years 7,8,9 and 10. Please note that Year 11 and Year 12 reports have already been emailed to parents. Any questions about reports, please do email your childs Deputy Principal.
NAIDOC Assembly
National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. People can support and get to know their local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities through activities and events held across the country.
The theme for 2024 is: Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud This year's theme celebrates the unyielding spirit of our communities and invites all to stand in solidarity, amplifying the voices that have long been silenced.
We would like to thank and congratulate Ari and Nia for hosting this year's NAIDOC Assembly at RBSC. We would also like to thank our special guest, Billy McPherson, for attending and speaking at our NAIDOC Assembly.

IEF News
IEF 3 Community AccessOur recent Community Access trip to the Maritime Museum was a captivating journey through maritime history, offering a wealth of knowledge and hands on activities allowing us to explore life at sea in days gone by. The museum's exhibits were diverse and immersive, spanning centuries of maritime exploration, trade, and technology. We were particularly fascinated by the ship- Blackmores First Lady, sailed by Kay Cottee. We learned about her journey and got a vivid insight into her life and living conditions during the 6 months she was at sea. The museum staff were knowledgeable and engaging, providing insightful explanations and answering our questions enthusiastically.
Visiting the Maritime Museum deepened our appreciation for the maritime heritage in Australia that has shaped global history. We gained a newfound respect for the challenges faced by sailors and explorers, as well as a broader understanding of how maritime equipment has evolved over the years.
In conclusion, our visit to the Maritime Museum was an enriching experience that combined learning with fun and hands-on exploration. It's a trip that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in maritime history and exploration.
CAPA News
Term Two has been an extremely busy time for Creative and Performing Arts students. Between Battle of The Bands, MEP Nights, In The Spotlight Dance Festival and the school play students have been preparing, creating and performing their Term Two assessment tasks.
Congratulations to the Year 7 Dance Ensemble and the Company Dance Ensemble for their beautiful performances at the In The Spotlight Dance Festival.
The school play entitled “Whom” has been a resounding success. The 2024 Drama Ensemble workshopped, created, scripted, and acted in an original piece of theatre that explored the idea of identity and the elements that help us to understand who we are.
The Drama Ensemble Backstage and Technical Crew were instrumental in running of the behind-the-scenes aspects of the production.
Congratulations to the entire cast and crew for your hard work and dedication
On Tuesday 2nd July, Year 12 Drama went on an excursion to the Sydney Theatre Company to see the Contemporary Australian Theatre play “Stolen” by Jane Harrison. “Stolen tells the stories of Jimmy, Ruby, Shirley, Sandy, and Anne: five members of the Stolen Generation, whose lives are irrevocably altered by their experiences in a social and political system that sought to erase their cultural identity forever” (Sydney Theatre Company).
Students took part in a pre-show discussion with the director Ian Michael and a post-show reflection with the actors and director of the production.
What an amazing experience to see the HSC text that you are studying on the stage in such a clever, thoughtful, and emotive performance. This was an experience that the Year 12 Drama students will never forget.
Extra Curricular Sport at RBSC
Rose Bay Secondary College currently have 4 Netball teams and 11 Basketball teams that play in weekly competitions.Win or lose, each student shows great sportsmanship and we are proud of their achievements.
Thank you for representing RBSC.
News from the MEP
Catching up on lots of news from the Music Ensemble Program this term with the MEP students playing in a multitude of events, not least at Wednesday's and Thursday’s showcase concerts at the school for the Ensembles and Rock Band concerts, several rock bands playing at the ‘70s Environment Day, and saying goodbye to our treasured Year 12 musicians…
Wednesday night in the school hall opened with the Rose Vox Choir followed by remarkable performances by the Percussion Ensemble, the Junior Concert Band, the Senior Concert Band, the Stage Band and then finally the Jazz Band rounding off the evening in fine style, with courageous and inspirational solos in each of the pieces.Thursday’s Rose Bay Rocks saw a total of eighteen (18!) rock bands hit the stage, with a special encore of the Year 12s in a combined performance as tribute to Sean and the MEP, and who announced the results of Battle of the Bands 2024: the band Louder winning for the seniors, and Saturation for the juniors. Woop!
In mid-May the super-talented Year 9 band Indecisiv played the rescheduled Bondi Beach Bash to a packed audience. This month the school was again impressively represented, this time by the RSBC Jazz Band at the World Oceans Day Concert in the Bondi Pavilion Theatre on Saturday 8th, and on Tuesday night last week by the Stage Band playing their first proper gig at Lazy Bones Lounge in Marrickville, supporting the TNJO. With this following on from a set at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music for the International Jazz Festival the week before, the students had an action-packed couple of weeks on top of studies and all their other commitments.
A huge thank you to MEP Director Murray Jackson, and Sean Windsor, Rock Band Director, who forever give tirelessly to the students and their performances, with very high expectations that ultimately bring out the best in the musicians. Many thanks too to Che Dunlop (and Mr Che for the photos) and the volunteers and local businesses who support Rose Bay MEP with their time or donations. The raffles were a huge success and bring much needed funds to support the program, so thanks to all the parents and friends who attended. Your support means a lot.
Additional thanks to the VET Tafe students and Mr Ossher for expertly handling sound and lighting for the rock bands, to Erin in Year 12 for creating the posters, and RBSC teachers Ms Vine and Mr Akele for their time on the two nights. Your presence and help with the student audience is much appreciated.
So with that we say farewell to Arts Captains Scarlett and Xavier and the huge cohort of Year 12 musicians now finished with the program to focus on HSC exams (many of whom multi-instrumentalists who had been with the MEP since Year 7, some even with the same Rock Bandmates!) who will be sorely missed by their Ensemble buddies in the lower years and by everybody in general. Good luck in your exams, we can’t wait to see what you all do next, and please keep in touch!
Finally, lots more planned for next term including ensemble performances, workshops for new high school starters, and insights into recording and marketing skills for rock band musicians.
