Young Writers’ Showcase
It was a privilege to attend The Young Writers Showcase last Wednesday to see Maya, our 2023 School Captain, celebrate the inclusion of her English Extension 2 major work in the annual Young Writers Showcase anthology. A total of 19 students’ major works were selected in this anthology and they were formally acknowledged for their achievements as part of the Sydney Writers’ Festival at Carriageworks, Eveleigh. Extension 2 English students can choose from a range of forms in which to compose their major work, including short fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, critical response, scripts and sound mediums such podcasts and speeches.
Maya’s extended critical response ‘The Feminine Imaginary: Embodiment and Identity in the Poetry of Margaret Atwood’ is a ficto-critical essay applying the psychoanalytic theory of Luce Irigaray to early poetry of Margaret Atwood. Maya interrogates how the exclusion of women's bodies within philosophy enduringly serves to stagnate women’s social possibilities and forces women to experience themselves ‘in the little-structured margins of a dominant ideology’, asking the question: do women lose something of the female self when the body is negated within identity theory?
Maya and her parents, both acknowledged the outstanding mentoring and teaching of Ms Hannah Westbrook, who was Maya’s Extension 2 English teacher. The school will be purchasing copies of the Young Writers’ Showcase anthology and will be soon be available for borrowing from the library.
Athletics Carnival
We are delighted to share with you the success of our Athletics Carnival, which took place at E.S. Marks on Thursday, May 16th. The day was graced with perfect weather, setting the stage for a mix of athleticism, enthusiasm and good sportsmanship.
One of the highlights of the event was the strong participation from all our students who attended. It was heartening to see students from all years enthusiastically taking part in various track and field events, creating a vibrant and energising atmosphere.
We extend our gratitude to Mr. John Flack for his exceptional organisation of the carnival. His dedication and meticulous planning ensured that the event ran smoothly, allowing students to fully immerse themselves in the experience. We also extend our thanks to the PDHPE faculty for their invaluable support and contribution in making the carnival a resounding success.
Year 12 Immersion Day
On Wednesday, our Year 12 students had the enriching experience of an Immersion Day. Organised by the Year 12 Captains and spearheaded by the passionate leadership of Holly, the Immersion Day was a day dedicated to academic excellence, mental health awareness, and team-building.
Throughout the day, students were engaged in three distinct sessions, each carefully designed to empower them with valuable skills and insights. In the academic excellence session, students had the privilege of hearing from a panel of high-achieving 2023 HSC students, including Sophia Andrews (ATAR 98.75), Lalith Galla (ATAR 99), Macy Gordon-Heywood (ATAR 97.8), and Ryan Hay (ATAR 99.15). Alongside these accomplished students, teachers Ms. Jessica Gray and Ms. Maddie Jones shared invaluable strategies that contributed to their HSC success. It was an inspiring opportunity for our Year 12 cohort to glean insights and practical tips for achieving their academic goals.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Headspace for their collaboration in running the mental health sessions. These sessions were designed to help students recognise stress and equip them with effective coping strategies. Students left these sessions armed with a toolkit of calming and alerting techniques, ensuring they are better equipped to navigate the challenges of their final year with resilience and well-being.
The team-building session was a highlight of the day, fostering connections and camaraderie among our Year 12 students. Led by Mr. McNaught, students participated in a series of engaging games carefully selected by the Year 12 Captains to ensure inclusivity and meaningful interaction. This session provided an opportunity for students to step out of their comfort zones, forge new friendships, and strengthen the bonds within our school community.
The Year 12 Immersion Day was not only a day of learning but also a day of empowerment and growth. We are immensely proud of our students' engagement and enthusiasm throughout the day, reflecting their commitment to personal and academic excellence.

COMMUNITY LIAISON OFFICER
Dear Rose Bay Secondary College Community,
I am thrilled to introduce myself as your new Community Liaison Officer, Nadia Kaye. It is a privilege to be part of such a vibrant and inclusive school community.
You might be wondering, what exactly does a Community Liaison Officer do? Well, in essence, I am here to be a bridge between the school, parents, and the wider community, all with the ultimate
goal of enhancing the well-being, happiness, and educational outcomes of our students.
My roots in the Eastern Suburbs run deep, having attended both Dover Heights and Vaucluse High Schools, now known as Rose Bay Secondary College. Over the years, I've been actively
involved in various community endeavours, from playing, coaching and managing local sports clubs to working at local gyms and teaching at a nearby public school.
With a background as a trained PDHPE teacher and extensive experience as the head of the P&C at Vaucluse Public School, I bring a wealth of knowledge and a deep understanding of the importance of community engagement. In my previous role, I coordinated many events, facilitated communication between the school and the community, and supported parents and families through various challenges.
As an advocate for RBSC, I am here to support the staff, parents, and students alike. With a vested interest in the school, as my daughter is the third generation to attend, I approach this role not only with an abundance of energy and enthusiasm, but with kindness and compassion. I am deeply committed to ensuring that every member of our community feels valued and supported.
I really look forward to working closely with everyone to build upon
the wonderful community we have here at Rose Bay SecondaryCollege.
