Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Update
On 27 May, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander group attended the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commemoration Ceremony. The Service combined conventional military protocol with Indigenous ceremonial display including a traditional smoking ceremony and featured the involvement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, school students, current serving, and veterans of the Australian Defence Force.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have served in every war and conflict since the Boer War. Although they fought – and sometimes died – shoulder-to-shoulder with their fellow Australians, they returned home to a country that still refused to acknowledge them as citizens and denied them the recognition and entitlements they had earned.

On Wednesday 15 June, 12 RBSC students competed in the Sydney East Regional Cross Country at Miranda. The results are as follows:

Netball Winners
Congratulations to team YEAR 12 who won the teachers vs students netball competition last week.
Stage 5 Premiers Debating Round 2 Results
Yesterday both of RBSC's Stage 5 debating teams participated in the second round of the Premier's Debating Challenge.
Our Year 10 Team (Sophie, Edward, Tarquin and Finn) debated extremely perceptively and developed a strong argument which they sustained throughout each speaker. Each were commended for the sophistication in their response and their manner of speaking. This team was successful in debating the affirmative stance in response to 'we should place a tax on fast fashion'.
Unfortunately, our Year 9 Team (Caleb, Gabriel, Tommy and Dante) were unsuccessful in their debate, however, were highly commended for the approach on a topic and the insight in their rebuttals. This team argued the affirmative side to 'the government should subsidise all vegetarian restaurants and food producers'.
Both teams are representing RBSC very highly and should each be proud of their efforts they are dedicating to their debates.
Entrepreneurial Student Workshop
RBSC had 10 students attend the WAYS entrepreneurial Student Workshop at Woollahra Council today. Students from across the Eastern Suburbs were also in attendance. The image below shows students Learning from Dr Jodie Lowinger author of ‘mind strength method’
RSBC School Uniform Survey
The Rose Bay SRC is conducting a review of the school's uniform and investigating potential ways to modify it and increase uniform uptake.
As a valued member of the school community, we would greatly appreciate your input to ensure our recommendations are as reflective of the views of the community as possible. Responses are being sought from all members of the community, including students, parents and teachers.
Please complete our short survey when you have a moment to help us ensure the RBSC uniform represents our diverse and incredible community as much as it possibly can. It should only take a few minutes.
Click here to complete the form. Responses to this form will be reviewed by SRC Representatives on the uniform team and presented to the school executive and P&C. All responses are anonymous.
Library News and Reviews
The hot and very important topic in around the school last week was the topic of consent. With all students attending this presentation, I thought it appropriate to highlight another set of gems in our RSCB Library, and most importantly Volume 473 “Understanding Sexual Consent” for anyone who feels called to explore this topic in more depth. This volume (and all others for that matter) are a great resource for teachers and students alike. Using them cuts out the need to search and research on the internet, as there is a trove of gems all in the one volume.
Called Issues in Society, these are an invaluable series of books, by topic, which contain previously published up to date and diverse information, sourced from newspapers, magazines, journals, government reports, surveys, web sites and lobby group literature. Collated in an easy to read and simple to understand format all issues can be found in a stand dedicated to the whole collection. The list of categories coved is vast and covers crime/ justice, family/relationships, drugs/alcohol, health/wellbeing, rights/discrimination, economics, welfare, indigenous/race, science/bioethics, environment/global and nationhood/civics. They are available in both book and electronic format.
A reminder that every Monday and Wednesday from 3:30–5:00 pm the library becomes a homework hub to assist any and all students with research, homework, assignments, and any studying issues they may need assistance with.
As usual a prompt about the Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC), which is well under way. All books for the challenge are clearly labelled on the spine, indicating not only that they are for the PRC but also what stage they are geared towards. This makes it very easy for students to choose a book.
RBSC P&C School Building Fund End of Financial Year Appeal
What does the Building Fund do?
The Building Fund aims to help improve RBSC facilities by funding permanent fixtures, fittings and building works that go above and beyond the priority items funded by the Department of Education.
The Building Fund recently contributed to a significant school infrastructure project. The permanent shade fixture currently being installed over the basketball courts on the top oval will provide an additional all-weather outdoor sports facility, as well as additional shade for students.
How to donate?
Please visit the RBSC P&C website to donate to the Building Fund. Donations are tax deductible.
With your tax deductible donation, the RBSC P&C Building fund will be in a strong position to assist with future building/infrastructure projects that will benefit students and the community.
The Rose Bay Secondary College Parents & Citizens’ Association School Building Fund has been endorsed as a tax-deductible gift recipient by the Australian Taxation Office. Donations to the fund may be deductible. For further information please read Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) information before making a gift.
