Newsletter Term 1 Week 10
From the Senior Executive
End of Term
We are finally reaching the end of an extended term and I want to congratulate the students on their hard work and commitment to the College values of being respectful, responsible and a learner. It has been a highly successful term for our classes and with many wins and awards across the wide range of activities that we offer. This week there has been great energy as the Captains led the Shave for a Cure on Monday and Friday will be our Cross Country event.
School Grounds
Over the holidays our P&C under the leadership of Paul Wilson will be constructing an Elders circle near the IEF gardens on the upper oval area. Paul has worked tirelessly to bring this project to fruition and it will use wonderful local sandstone donated by Paul Thurloe from the NSW Stone Masons. We appreciate the generosity of the Stone Masons in donating such valuable local sandstone. The metal gates at the front of the school are due to be replaced as well early in the holidays by the department.
Parent support
I also want to express my thanks to the parents who have volunteered in the library to assist with covering new textbooks. This is a time consuming job and I really appreciate Galea McGregor, Nathalie Altamiranda, Clare Sawyer, Suzanne Smith Huberman for giving so generously of their time.
Buses
I received an updated timetable for school transport on the Buses.(See below) I will be emailing all families today as well with this information. The newer timetable works with our adjusted times and I wish to express my thanks to the Community for their support as the College has worked through the negotiations for this and also managed the impact on your children when the buses arrive late. I do want to acknowledge the support of our office staff who have dropped everything to set up a system so we can quickly get students signed in when the buses arrive late of a morning. I also want to acknowledge the efforts of the Customer Experience, Stakeholder & Communications Manager at John Holland who has worked closely with me as Principal as I communicated concerns and worked with us to find short and long term solutions.
A key component now is for all students using the school buses to tap on and off with the opal card. This information is used to determine student numbers and decide on the level of service. If our students do not tap on then our numbers are lower and this will impact future planning of routes. Of an afternoon our Bus teachers are reminding students and setting up processes to promote tapping on. I request that your remind your child about the need to use their card and check in in regularly that they have it on them to use. I am confident the new timetable will see an improvement in the issues with lateness that we have all been aware of.
I wish our families a happy and safe holidays. Term 2 resumes for students on Tuesday 30 April.
IEF News
Last week, IEF3 embarked on a visit to Bondi Junction for Community Access. Community Access is a scheduled learning opportunity that enables students to cultivate independence in various aspects such as travel, shopping, food ordering, money management, and social skills. The IEF students eagerly anticipate this biweekly event as it offers them valuable experiences and growth opportunities.
RBSC Chess
The RBSC chess club enlisted 18 students to compete in the initial round of the Inter-school Chess Challenge, hosted by the Sydney Academy of Chess. Since our school was the sole participant in the high school category, our students engaged in matches amongst themselves. Each student completed 7 games, yielding the following results:
- Securing 1st place was Tanner Weinbren (Year 11).
- Following closely in 2nd place was Daniel Levin (Year 9).
- Eric Yang clinched the 3rd place.
- Ethan Saptura and Tain McKenzie shared the 4th place.
Sports News
On 22 March, the Open Cricket Team played Lucas Heights High School at Vaucluse in the Davidson Shield competition.
After losing the toss, we were sent into the field in windy and humid conditions, but some disciplined bowling and committed fielding quickly reduced the opposition to 7-49 at the halfway point of their innings. Unfortunately, as the temperatures soared our concentration levels dropped and we let a couple of tough chances go down as the opposition's tail-enders took full toll, eventually setting a score of 8/137 in their allotted 40 overs. The pick of our bowlers were Jeremy (Year 8) who took 1/14 off 8 overs, Joseph who took 1/20 off 8, and Ethan who took 1/26 off 8.
Our response never really got going and we were bundled out for 72 in 37 overs. Ethan completed a fine all-round effort by top scoring with a gritty 28.
Thanks to all players for their efforts on the day, and a special mention to Joseph and Ethan (Year 11) in their final game. Both boys have represented RBSC since Year 7. Mr Weavers
Library News
With the school holidays fast approaching, now is the time for students to visit The Bob Bellear Memorial Library and borrow books for their holiday reading.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) is now underway, and the holidays will provide the perfect opportunity for participating Year 7 to 9 students to make a dent to their PRC reading lists! The 2024 updated PRC Reading List can be found at the following link: https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/booklist/home.html .
At last week’s school Celebration Assembly, RBSC teacher, Ms Jody Kennedy and Deputy Principal, Mr Ian Godby, presented Year 7 student, Avraham Bunin, with his official Library Monitor badge. Avraham has kindly (and of his own volition) volunteered his school breaks to work with the Library Team each day. One of the busiest places in the school, there is always something to do in the library! The Library Team would like to congratulate Avraham and thank him for his offer of service.
In due course, we will be requesting applications for other student library volunteers to come and work with us. Watch this space!

Waverley Council Bicycle Strategy Workshop
We’re seeking input from diverse ages and backgrounds as well as people who have varying experience and comfort levels with bicycle riding throughout the Waverley Local Government Area. We’re even interested to hear from people who have considered bicycle riding for transport or leisure, but are reluctant due to safety concerns.
This is a great opportunity for children and young people to give Council their feedback and brainstorm with other residents. Especially as safe transport options were raised as a priority for local action at the Waverley Youth Summit in 2023.
5.30 – 7.30pm, Thursday 2 May
Waverley Library Theatrette
Level 2, 32-48 Denison Street, Bondi Junction
Dinner will be provided.
Places are limited and registrations are essential: haveyoursay.waverley.nsw.gov.au/bicyclestrategy.
All ages are welcome, however, children under 18 years of age participating in the workshop must be accompanied by a parent/carer who is also participating.
Careers News
Rose Bay Secondary College is running our annual Careers Information Day for students in Years 10, 11 and 12 on Thursday 30th May.
This will be an opportunity for students to explore a range of post school options including universities, private training providers, employment and traineeships and apprenticeships as well community organisations. Ex students will also be in attendance to share their ‘post RBSC story’ with advice on school, study and career development.
The timing for this fits neatly with the HUGE Careers Expo at Randwick Racecourse which runs from Thursday 30th May until Saturday 1st June.
I strongly encourage parents and students to visit the big careers event at Randwick – to answer post school careers and study questions as well as to explore the wide range of opportunities available for young people.
