Welcome Back
It has been a joy to greet students at the front gate and to visit classrooms to see the care and energy our students are bringing to their studies at the commencement of the 2024 school year. Our Secretary for Education, Murat Dizdar held a launch at the Town Hall last Monday to welcome school leaders and aspiring teachers to the start of the school year. This was a very positive event with Prue Carr the minister supporting public education and recognising teachers as key workers in supporting our students and providing opportunities for all. Find a summary video here.
I look forward to working with our students staff and community to build further bridges of learning and opportunity in 2024.
Our welcome to Year 7 and Open Night will take place on February 27.
The following Tuesday, March 5 is our Year 12 Parent Teacher night.
Celebrations
We had outstanding HSC results in 2023 and the good news keeps continuing. May Haggstrom has been nominated for the Young Writer Showcase, this is the anthology created from exemplary Extension Two major works. We also celebrate with Zephyr Johnstone-Grey's who is being exhibited at Hazelhurst Art Gallery, with their Art Express opening on Saturday night.
We also celebrated Luca Smith’s work at the opening of ArtExpress at the NSW Art Gallery last Wednesday evening.
Valentines Day
Our student leaders are working hard in preparation for our yearly Valentine's Day celebrations. A mufti theme will be in place for this Friday.
Buses
Thank you to our community for your support as we work with the bus company to revise and change the bus timetables. Your prompt responses and information is assisting us in making the case with John Holland. https://transportnsw.info/contact-us/feedback/bus-feedback

Debating Program Information
Dear Parents/Carers,
Rose Bay Secondary College has a strong debating program. We were thrilled to see our Stage 6 team reach the grand final of the Premier’s Debating Challenge in 2022 and other teams enjoyed considerable success in competitions held throughout 2023.
Our Debating Tutorial program provides opportunities for students to develop and practise their debating and public speaking skills. Students will have the opportunity to represent RBSC at interschool debating tournaments throughout the year, such as the Premier’s Debating Challenge and Eastside Debating Competition (beginning March 1) as well as social debates.
For Years 7-11, coaching runs on Friday afternoons from 3:05 to 4:25pm in classrooms in B Block English classrooms. Year 12 coaching runs on Tuesday afternoons from 2:35pm - 4:05pm. The course will commence on Friday, February 16 2024 and will run throughout terms 1-3, accounting for 27 weeks of coaching. Students are expected to attend all sessions.
Selection for competitive debates is based on merit; and a debater’s attendance and performance in training will be taken into consideration. This program is operated by the RBSC P&C and coordinated by Mr Ari Papas (English faculty) and Mrs Christy Godby (Rel. Deputy Principal) and supported by a team of experienced debaters and adjudicators.
The annual cost of the program is $260, which goes towards paying the debating coaches. Families may be eligible for the Creative Kids voucher, providing a subsidy $50. More information will be provided once we receive expressions of interest.
If you would like to register your child for the 2024 Debating Program, please complete this form. Students will receive a permission letter with further information about how to pay early next week.
If you have any questions about the program please contact Christy Godby at christine.godby@det.nsw.edu.au .
Kind Regards,
Ari Papas and Christy Godby

Languages news- Hebrew
4u2gr0w is an online, live and interactive group tutoring company with highly experienced educators each with decades of experience.
They are launching Hebrew for high school students starting in February 2024. If students want to do Hebrew for HSC, the NESA requirement is for 120 hours of time with a tutor in each of years 11 and 12. This can become unaffordable at private tutor rates, especially in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. Their rates are at least half the price of private rates making it a sustainable model for both Modern and Ancient Hebrew for HSC.
RBSC Year 7 Social
Come along and meet other Year 7 parents, P&C members, and teachers. Note that this is an adults-only event as Rose Bay Secondary College does not endorse activities where students and alcohol are both present.
$20 entry (includes light refreshments plus 1 wine, beer or soft drink on arrival). A full bistro and bar also available separately.
