Newsletter Term 4 Week 7
From the Senior Executive
Excellence in Art
We are so proud and excited for our four HSC students whose Visual Arts works will be displayed across four galleries as part of Art Express, the showcase of outstanding art works from the HSC. We want to acknowledge that this success comes from the sustained focus and consistent work of the students but also the support and enrichment of the art faculty over the six years of their study at Rose Bay Secondary College.
Enrichment through Co-Curricular activities
As the term progresses the College has been a hive of activity with many excursions and activities that extend and enrich our students understanding and social engagement. We thank the teachers who give extra time to planning, organising and running these events.
Five Period Day
We have received signoff for the five period day which will commence next year in 2024. Please see the proposed times below. These times have been arrived at from the survey results of staff, students and parents.
College Infrastructure improvement
A co-funded upgrade (P&C grant and College) of the Plaza and Canteen toilets will commence at the end of term with the planned completion date being by the start of the 2024 academic year. The Plaza toilet work may commence in week 9 to ensure it is completed by this date.
The Northern lift has been replaced and work will shortly be commencing on the southern lift.
Principal going back to class.
Ms Archer has been scheduling time to visit every class in the College. It has been a joy for her to be part of the engaging and quality teaching that occurs every day. In the last week Ms Archer has experienced tenses in discussing French eating times, print making and design, the passive voice of Orwell, Spartan society and Japanese culture. Year 7 has especially impressed her with their attention to quality in cooking their hamburgers.
ART EXPRESS - HSC SHOWCASE
Every year, Year 12 Visual Arts students toil over their Bodies of Work, imaging that maybe they could make it into the HSC Art Express Collection. This is an illustrious selection of Art Works, which have not only achieved extraordinary marks for the practical component of the Visual Arts course, but have then gone on to be chosen by the curators of the different galleries, to showcase the talent that is apparent in the Visual Arts.
The 2023 cohort from Rose Bay Secondary College has exceeded all expectations, and have not only had FOUR Nominations for Art Express, but all FOUR have then gone on to be selected for the Showcase.
A HUGE congratulations to the students selected, and to ALL the Visual Arts students in the 2023 group.
Here are the students and venues for the Showcase Season:
Sienna Journey of Colour Together (Tamworth Regional Gallery)
Zephyr Do You See Me Now? (Hazelhurst Arts Centre, Yarrila Arts and Museum, Coffs Harbour)

TAFE Animation Workshop
On Friday in weeks 5 and 6 a group of Year 10 and 12 students visted the TAFE animation studio. The students were really welcomed into TAFE by the animation department, were shown the degree course studios and listened to a former student talk about study/ post course opportunities.
He showed them examples of his work including Lord of the Rings and Star Wars animated clips. They were very impressed- naturally! They also sampled use of the industry program MAYA to create a 3D animated image in a classroom setting .
The students were also taken to Flying Bark animation studios in Alexandria and given a tour, introduced to the creative team, had a chance to ask them some really great questions, watch some current animated Flying Bark show reels including Marvel movies and then finished off with a pizza!
Sarah also won a Wacom digital drawing pad in the raffle they held for the students.
The students were really engaged and inspired about the potential possibility of a creative career post school.
Year 12 Geography excursion
Year 12 Geography students attended a fieldwork excursion at Barangaroo on 17 November to explore the urban dynamics of urban consolidation and urban renewal. Our students participated in a range of fieldwork activities run by the Observatory Hill Environmental Education Centre. These focused on the social, economic, and environmental impacts of the various developments at the Barangaroo site. A quick walk through Millers Point and The Rocks further consolidated their understanding of the extensive urban changes occurring in Sydney currently. Our students were singled out by their fieldwork teacher as highly engaged and insightful, and they are to be congratulated for their efforts and behaviour on the day.

We are pleased to announce that Year 11 student, Ben was selected to be ‘CEO for a Day’ with School Infrastructure NSW. School Infrastructure is the division within the NSW Department of Education that designs, builds and maintains more than 2,200 schools and three facilities across the state.
During the day, Ben worked with students from other public high schools to develop solutions to design challenges they’d like changed. The team were incredibly impressed by Ben’s active participation throughout the day and his insightful questions.
Anthony Manning, Chief Executive of School Infrastructure, invites students to meet with members from the senior executive each year to learn about the work of the infrastructure industry and the many career opportunities. This year 22 students from 17 high schools took part in CEO for a Day.
Grease rehearsals!
Grease rehearsals have unfolded throughout the week, blending hard work with an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. The dedicated ensemble of cast members, crew, teachers, skilled lighting and sound operators, musicians, and admin staff have diligently collaborated to ensure readiness for the upcoming show in week 8.
A notable highlight occurred on Monday when the cast and band engaged in their inaugural "Sitzprobe" session under the guidance of our accomplished musical director, Matthew Reid. This intensive workshop saw the fusion of vocal performances and musical accompaniment, setting the stage for a harmonious production.
The momentum continued on Tuesday as the directors meticulously fine-tuned the lighting plot, introducing the school's new innovative moving lights to breathe life into the performance. Wednesday marked the shift to a comprehensive Tech run. This session aimed to familiarize the cast and crew with the intricacies of headset mics, lighting cues, props, and set changes.
As anticipation builds, Thursday and Friday are earmarked for the eagerly awaited Full Dress Rehearsals, serving as the final touchpoints before the curtains rise in week 8. We invite you to come and witness the culmination of the hard work and dedication that the entire production team has poured into this project. Support the arts and join us by securing multiple tickets to the show. Your presence will not only be a testament to our collective effort but also a celebration of the vibrant and dynamic world of "Grease" that awaits you.

Library News
The Bob Bellear Memorial Library team have been busy covering a new batch of books soon to be unveiled! The new books will be put on display soon so students can start contemplating their summer holiday reading lists. This new collection will have something for everyone, with genres covering topics such as: Love & Romance, Teen Life, Science Fiction, Graphic Novels, Horror, Adventure, Fantasy, Gothic Fiction, Historical Fiction, Australian Stories, Mystery & Suspense, Supernatural, Humor, Animal Stories and ‘Choose Your Own Stories.’
‘Choose Your Own Stories’ is a fun genre where the book’s protagonist faces two or three options the reader can select from so, they can arrive at different story endings. Books in the library have a system of coded book genre stickers on the spines so that students can see the book’s genre at a glance. There are also some beautiful new picture and non-fiction books to choose from. If students are interested in a particular genre, they can ask at the Help Desk so the library team can help track down a book of interest.
It has been great to see the new Year 12 (Class of 2024) making the most of the library study spaces already this term.
Remember Homework Club is open Mondays and Wednesdays 3-5pm each week in the library. All student ages are welcome. Tutors are on hand to help with any study-related questions and … there are biscuits!
