Art Express and Encore Nominations
The Rose Bay Secondary College Creative and Performing Arts Faculty received some wonderful news this week regarding the acknowledgment of the work of their Year 12 students. Sienna Harding, Zephyr Johnstone-Grey, Otis Sealey and Luca Smith received nominations for Art Express and Tomas Kamen a nomination for Encore in Music. Ms Archer referenced this achievement to the school in the on-line assembly and spoke about the dedication that these students showed to their studies from day one of Year 11. Receiving nominations for Art Express and Encore in Music is a significant achievement and reflects the high standard of work produced by these young artists and the musician. We acknowledge their excellent work and congratulate all of them.
We would also like to acknowledge the CAPA Faculty teaching staff and congratulate them as well for their role in the teaching and support of these students. Ms Alonzo, Ms Laird and Mr Regina are to be commended for their teaching and support of their students. Four nominations for Art Express and one nomination for Encore in Music speaks to the tangible symbol of the quality teaching and high expectations culture of our College.
Uniform and punctuality
We have noticed some students are not always wearing their uniform with pride. We request that parents support the College by assisting their child to have uniform washed and ready for each school day. If you need assistance with uniform, please contact our office to speak with a HT Wellbeing.
The College expectation is that every student attends from the commencement of school at 9:00 am. We are providing ongoing education in assemblies about the importance of punctuality and good habits. Under the Education Act it is a shared responsibility of parents and the school to maintain high attendance. The benefits of education and high engagement are overwhelming supported by research evidence that indicates that high attendance for the full school day leads to success in work and also successful relationships and life satisfaction.
Retrieval Practice
At Tuesdays on-line assembly Mrs Godby did a presentation on Retrieval Practice and it was very well received by the students and staff. Retrieval practice improves learning by pulling information out of your head rather than cramming it into it. With this method, students are practicing knowledge that they already have. It allows students to use the knowledge or lose it. With retrieval practice, struggling is a good thing for learning; what Scientists call “desirable difficulty”. Retrieval practice improves students understanding of their own learning; what Scientists call “metacognition".

All Years - Student support
Navy Careers Day
On Wednesday 8th November 9 students attended the NAVY Careers Day at 2 locations - The new International Convention Centre and then on board HMAS Adelaide.
At the Convention Centre, the students eagerly engaged in career-focused conversations with all the different departments and career opportunities with many different Navy personnel on hand. Several of our students Franklin, Valentina, Chloe, and Jules were very knowledgeable in the requirements needed for their career path within the Defence Force. Other students were asking important questions to help give them a better understanding of the requirements needed and to help with their decision making process.
Just before lunch, we were transported across the harbour to HMAS Adelaide on board a Landing craft, taking in the wonders of the harbour on a beautiful day.
After lunch, the students were taken on a tour of the ship and witnessed and explored many different roles on board, from the firefighting equipment to the bridge, to trying on bomb disposal equipment, the scuba diving equipment, checking out some of the different types of weapons used and seeing up close the medical facilities.
The students were very excited by all of the information gathered and seeing first-hand the facilities on board the ship. We all would like to thank Ms Lockton for organising a magnificent day.
All Years - Bus behaviour
I have had concerns raised with me by members of the public about the disrespectful behaviour of a number of students who are catching the bus from the Shuk bus stop.
The College policy is that students should be catching the buses from school, where there is full supervision and processes to ensure students can safely catch their buses home.
The College also expects all our students to show exemplary respect and responsibility in the community. If any student is behaving disrespectfully and can be identified as a member of the College then disciplinary action can be taken.
I am aware the majority of our students behave with great pride and respect in the community, and I am disappointed that the actions of a few are tarnishing the reputation of the majority of our students.
