Positive Partnerships for Learning

The positive partnership between families and Rose Bay Secondary College underpins the high expectations and inclusive culture expected by our school community. We look forward to working together to provide the best possible outcomes for all students. In the same way as we treat nurses, doctors, front line workers, retail staff with dignity and respect, teachers and support staff also deserve the same behaviour. The Department of Education expects that all parents follow the guidelines and all communication is presented in a positive and constructive manner. The Department has a legal obligation to ensure our school is a safe place for both staff and students. This includes taking measures to ensure that the communication our staff receive is respectful and does not negatively impact on their wellbeing. We expect that communication at all times is:

  •       Polite and respectful.
  •       Focusing on relevant facts and possible solutions.
  •      Providing our staff with the information that is needed to resolve the issue or current concern.

Thank you for following these simple guidelines to ensure a positive partnership between families and school.

From the Senior Executive

From the Principal’s Desk

I had the great pleasure and privilege of seeing our wonderful Senior Stage Band perform at the Festival of the Winds. Their skill and professional presentation was a wonderful example of the excellence that is an intrinsic part of the College.

This week we also celebrate success with our Celebration and Sports Awards assembly. Year assemblies will take place in week 10 to acknowledge the excellent work of our students.

We farewell Year 12 at their graduation on Tuesday 19th September and reflect on their growth as they have journeyed through the College and each personal success story. Stay tuned to the social pages for updates on the year activities that are linked to celebrating their time at Rose Bay Secondary College.

A letter was sent out from the Director last week informing our community that Ms Bright will be extending her leave until the end of the year to focus on her health.

I will be Relieving Principal during this time.

We welcome Mr Ian Godby back to the Deputy Principal’s chair for two days a week for the rest of this term. Ms Wood will continue to support Year 7 as Deputy Principal during this time.

Mr Chivers is currently in the Year 8 and 11 Deputy Chair and we will be following and Expression of Interest process to confirm who will act as Deputy for Term 4.

Ms Buckley is Deputy for Year 10 and 12 and is overseeing the Transition program for our incoming Year 7, 2024.

Ms Sihavong is relieving as Head Teacher, Wellbeing.

Mobile Phone Ban. Term 4.
Over the next few weeks we will continue our explicit teaching of the expectations in the College
relating to digital devices. All carers will be emailed with specific information this week so you can
plan for this change. Below are the slides for our students:

IEF News

Where are they now?

Matthew Vass left the IEF in 2019 after 6 excellent years with us. We reached out to him to see how post school life was treating him and it sounds like it has been great. Matthew explains that he loves his job at Kambala school, it is engaging and his daily responsibilities offer a perfect balance. P

Hi I'm Matthew and I left Rose Bay Secondary College IEF in 2019.

Since then I have been very busy, firstly, straight after leaving school I concentrated on travel training and finding some work experience and continued to go to the gym and make healthy choices for my mind and body.  I enjoyed finding new groups to go out with as well.

During covid it was a tough time as all my routines changed, however I was able to keep going to the gym because we moved to the park out in the sunshine which was wonderful.

Then even more wonderful is I got offered an amazing job at Kambala this happened towards the end of 2020 and I have been there ever since.  I work in the facilities and maintenance department and I help around the school grounds.  My most important job is to do my deliveries to the staff rooms with fresh milk, biscuits teas and coffees, I also use a big machine to crush boxes and a leaf blower to keep the grounds tidy.  I love my work and am supported by Job Support and Imogen comes out and visits me every month to make sure I am ok and my team leader is happy with my work.  I work with a lovely bunch of guys who are inclusive and friendly.

I still love going to the movies and see everything that comes out – mum and I now spoil ourselves to gold class sometimes. I went skiing and to Disney land at Christmas and it was so beautiful.

Year 9 Cookie Excavation

This term, the year 9 Elective History class is studying archaeology. We have investigated famous archaeologists in the media (like Indiana Jones), and archaeological sites such as Stonehenge and the Tomb of Tutankhamun. The year 9 students also became archaeologists themselves, using real archaeological tools to safely excavate precious chocolate chips from cookies. Elliot was the most talented archaeologist, painstakingly excavating the artefacts, and leaving a pile of crumbs in his wake.

NSW Australian of the Year Schools Forum Excursion

On Friday the 1st of September, a group of students attended a seminar at the parramatta campus of western Sydney university, with a panel of keynote speakers - being the 2023 NSW Australians of the year.

These include:

- Winner of NSW and Australian Local Hero of the Year Amar Singh, the founder of turbans for Australia - A charity led organisation, that specializes in disaster aid and food relief.

- Winner of the NSW Australian of the Year Craig Foster, former Socceroo captain and sports broadcaster for the ABC.

- Winner of the NSW Young Australian of the Year Lottie Daziel, the founder of Banish - an environmental organization which helps to promote more recycling and sustainability in other areas.

- Winner of the NSW Senior Australian of the year Teresa Plane, a palliative care pioneer.

Over the course of the day we learnt so much about their individual stories and what it means to help the community and how we can overcome obstacles and make an impact on society. There was also a video message from the premier Chris Minns and the students were lucky enough to do a tour of Western Sydney University’s Parramatta campus.

Library News

Time to book in your ‘Blind Date With A Book’!

The enthusiasm of students for Book Week this year saw some great entries for one of The Bob Bellear Memorial Library’s Book Week activities, ‘Blind Date With A Book’.

The below image shows the wide range of creative entries made by students. This beautiful array of decorated books with clever blurbs, hinting at what the reader can expect from the book, have been on display in the library for the past week. Now the same students who entered can come and select one of the other books to borrow for their own blind book reading date!

The Library’s new selection of Children’s Book Council of  Australia  #CBCA2023 shortlisted, honoured and winning entries for the 2023 Book Week Awards will also be available to borrow from the end of Week 8.

The Voice …

Many students, voting for the first time, have mentioned their confusion with the YES and NO campaigns for the upcoming Voice referendum. The Library has printed off the Australian Government’s official referendum booklet so that students can read through this at their leisure in the Library.

Don’t forget RBSC’s Homework Club is open from 3:30-5pm, in the Library, every Monday and Wednesday during school terms.

The Library Team is always happy to help students with any Library-related learning or study queries they may have. Just come to the Help Desk and ask!

Uniform Policy

Core rules:

Maintain a neat appearance, including adhering to the requirements of the school's uniform or dress code policy. Rose Bay Secondary College is a "uniform" school and all students are expected to wear the correct school uniform. The Department of Education supports the waering of school uniforms by students and the upholding of high standards of dress by students and staff. A school uniform identifies students as belonging to Rose Bay secondary College. We expect students to wear the uniform with pride during school hours, while travelling to and from school, and when engaged in school activities out of school hours.

Students may wear any item from the Rose Bay Secondary College current uniform selections on any school day. Students will need to be in sports uniform for practical PE lessons and sports days.

Students may choose to mix and match from all items listed in the uniform shop and are expected to be in full Rose Bay Secondary College clothing everyday.

Attention: Rose Bay Secondary College community

When RBSC first opened in 2003, secure full-height perimeter fencing was installed on the site boundaries at the front of the school and part-way down both sides. This was carried out by the Department of Education’s Asset Management Unit (AMU), which oversees such site maintenance and security. However, further fencing, around the lower side and back areas of RBSC grounds (below the oval), was never erected. It was deemed that any remaining sections could be completed at a later date, as required. In the meantime, the site would rely on the various fences of our neighbours to provide security and protection from unauthorized intrusions.

Such arrangements have proved inadequate, to the point where both school premises and students are currently exposed to an unacceptably high level of risk. The RBSC Executive and the P&C therefore believe it is imperative that full-height perimeter fencing is now installed, securely enclosing the boundary of the entire site.

The RBSC Executive has been closely monitoring the situation since the return to on-site education post-COVID. CCTV footage frequently captures unauthorized persons accessing RBSC grounds to walk their dogs, hold parties and picnics (each instance has been duly noted and logged with the Department of Education). This results in litter (including broken bottles) and dog faeces on the oval, as well as damage to the basketball areas (which have just been refurbished at great expense to RBSC and the P&C) and the oval. Each morning teaching staff inspect the grounds and clean up, rather than risk the OHS implications of exposing students to broken glass and dog faeces on the oval. This is not fair on the staff and a genuine hazard to our student population.  Further damage done by dogs includes potholes dug out on the oval and digging damage on the surrounding landscape and gardens. This poses a real danger to students playing sports on the oval, and costs a vast sum to repair – currently most of the $20,000 annual budget for the oval’s upkeep is consumed by repairs to turf and ground.

Over several years, neighbours have built unauthorized back gates into their fences. Whilst it is illegal to access school premises via such gates, it is clear that this is occurring. The RBSC Executive has written to all neighbours reminding them that unauthorized entry is illegal and requesting such practices cease and desist. To date, this has not been effective.

The AMU have informed the School Executive that funds are available to complete the remaining sections of fencing, but at the moment we are told it is just one item on a long list. We believe it is time for this issue to be made an immediate priority.

Until recently, nearby Waverley Public School had a similar combination of adequate/inadequate perimeter fencing securing the grounds. Despite concerns being raised by parents and staff, because it is located next to a police station and court house, the site was not considered to be high risk – until under-arrest suspected criminals jumped the fence into the playground and made their escape through the crowds of students. Waverley Public School now has full-height perimeter fencing securely enclosing the school! Similarly, RBSC needs to control its own security arrangements, and can no longer rely on the various fencing erected by neighbours. We do not seek to restrict any authorized and supervised access that poses no security risk, and we propose that all fencing erected will be inside the RBSC boundary. We will also request that the fencing around the side and back gates be heightened to deter students from jumping the fence on their way to/from school.

The potential risk of a ‘major incident’ is too great to allow the current level of unauthorized access to continue. We therefore seek support from the RBSC community to move forward with this proposal as a matter of urgency, and ask you to sign this petition:
https://www.change.org/Fully_Fence_RBSC

Yours sincerely,
The P&C Executive Committee
