Positive Partnerships for Learning
The positive partnership between families and Rose Bay Secondary College underpins the high expectations and inclusive culture expected by our school community. We look forward to working together to provide the best possible outcomes for all students. In the same way as we treat nurses, doctors, front line workers, retail staff with dignity and respect, teachers and support staff also deserve the same behaviour. The Department of Education expects that all parents follow the guidelines and all communication is presented in a positive and constructive manner. The Department has a legal obligation to ensure our school is a safe place for both staff and students. This includes taking measures to ensure that the communication our staff receive is respectful and does not negatively impact on their wellbeing. We expect that communication at all times is:
- Polite and respectful.
- Focusing on relevant facts and possible solutions.
- Providing our staff with the information that is needed to resolve the issue or current concern.
Thank you for following these simple guidelines to ensure a positive partnership between families and school.
From the Senior Executive
Rose Bay Secondary College gives our warmest congratulations to our Year 12 students who have recently completed their trials with flying colours. The Year 12 cohort has demonstrated dedication, hard work, and resilience. These trials not only serve as a reflection of their academic journey, but also highlight the collaborative efforts of our teachers, staff, and parents who have supported them every step of the way. We now head into the cycle of feedback, drafting and refining for the next few weeks as the class of 2023 prepares for their HSC examinations.
In line with our commitment to fostering an environment conducive to learning and personal growth, starting from the next term, we will be implementing a mobile phone ban during school hours. This mobile phone ban will enhance focused learning, reducing distractions, and encouraging meaningful face-to-face interactions among students. We believe that by creating a gate-to-gate mobile phone ban, in all areas of the school grounds, students will be better equipped to immerse themselves in their studies and engage more deeply with their peers and teachers.
Simultaneously, we encourage all students, not just our Year 12 cohort, to adopt healthy study habits that contribute to their overall well-being and academic success. Building a strong foundation of effective study practices not only enhances academic performance but also cultivates essential life skills. We recommend dedicating time to regular breaks, maintaining a balanced diet and staying physically active. These habits contribute to improved concentration, reduced stress, and increased productivity. By embracing these principles, students can approach their studies with a refreshed perspective, leading to greater achievements both inside and outside the classroom.
Year 11 Exams
Our Year 11 exams commence this week. The draft timetable is below. All students must be present
at the start of their exams. Delays in transport are not deemed reasonable grounds for misadventure
so the College advice is plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of exams.
This is an exam block ,so students only need to attend their exams, the rest of the time is to be spent
studying and reviewing their work.
Captains Report
It’s been a busy few weeks for the student body here at RBSC, with various academic and other events occurring around the school.
On Friday the 25th August, RBSC celebrated Wear it Purple day, a day about celebrating and fostering inclusion for LGBTQIA+ young people. Over the course of the day, a bake sale and sausage sizzle were held, bands performed and the IEF opened a special edition of their “Op 4 Inclusion” op shop. The day was a huge success, raising over $850, which will all be donated to Wear it Purple to help them continue their work in supporting LGBTQIA+ youth nationwide. Thank you to all who helped plan and run the day.
Week 7 also saw the return of an annual highlight on the RBSC arts calendar, with Battle of the Bands. This saw our talented musicians clash in the hopes of displaying their musical ability and winning the title of best band. Nine bands competed across 2 days, with Wednesday August 30th seeing the junior competition, and Friday September 1st the seniors. Thank you to all those who helped run and organise the event, and to those who came down to the plaza and showed their support. The winners will be announced Monday September 4th.
A final good luck to year 11, who will next week begin their 2 week long preliminary exams. Good luck as well to everyone in year 7-10 with your upcoming assessment tasks- make sure to study hard and look out for each other and yourselves.
If you’re not already following the student Instagram page make sure you do (@rbscstudentvoice2023), for up to date reminders about future upcoming events!

Cyberia
On Tue 5th September Brainstorm Productions will be presenting their student wellbeing performance 'Cyberia' for Year 7. 'Cyberia' is a live theatre experience that addresses mental health, (cyber)bullying and the responsible use of technology. The performance is part of our student wellbeing curriculum and has been developed by education and mental health professionals.
Ruby loses touch with her values and gets caught up in cyberbullying and online drama. Anxious and struggling with impulse control, she is in danger of damaging her digital reputation. For Tim, a lack of sleep and social interaction leads to scams and dangerous online behaviours. He becomes isolated and withdraws into gaming. Students follow Tim and Ruby’s journey as they develop skills for help-seeking, resilience and positive mental health.
Brainstorm Productions is one of Australia’s most experienced and respected theatre in education companies, performing to over 260,000 students every year. They offer a range of programs to help schools nurture healthy and harmonious environments, addressing issues such as mental health, online safety, bullying and resilience, and are endorsed by the eSafety Commissioner as a Trusted eSafety Provider. Learn more about Brainstorm Productions by visiting their website (brainstormproductions.edu.au), or following them on Instagram (@brainstormproductions_) or Facebook (@Brainstorm.Productions).

Library News
The Festival that was Book Week 2023!
Read – Grow – Inspire was the theme of this year’s Book Week and we’re happy to say that The Bob Bellear Memorial Library has been overflowing with reading, growth and inspiration over the past few weeks! The Library Team would like to thank the Rose Bay Secondary College students, of all ages and interests, who really got behind creating a wonderful festival atmosphere with their support of the activities and new book reveals that the library has held. SRC students assisted by suggesting some entertaining activity ideas:
Blind Date with a Book was a big hit with students working on their mystery date book decorating and descriptions enthusiastically during breaks. The result was some very special entries that are now on display in the library during the next week for students to later borrow for their own surprise date with a book! (see photo)
The Bookmark Colouring-In and Creation activity ended up being a great lesson in mindfulness for students of all ages. Students spent breaks engrossed in the quiet, meditative practice of colouring-in. Many of them commenting on the calming effect.
Year 11 student, Raven Carlton, kindly assisted the Library Team by organising a few breaks worth of fun Kahoot Book Trivia that some of the younger students really enjoyed.
Acting Principal, Ms Cathy Archer, joined Teacher Librarian, Ms Margaret McLelland and Head Teacher – Teaching and Learning, Mr Adam Harris to award participating students special Book Week Library/School Certificates. (see photo)
Due to the Covid 19 restrictions, this was the first Book Week the school has been able to host in a few years and it was a great success. The Library Team looks forward to launching Book Week again in 2024. Students are encouraged to provide any Book Week activity ideas they might like to see held in 2024. Please visit the Library Help Desk anytime for a chat.

What is the ATAR?
The ATAR is a rank, not a mark.
The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a number between 0.00 and 99.95 that indicates a student’s position relative to all the students in their age group (ie all 16 to 20 year olds in NSW). So, an ATAR of 80.00 means that you are 20 per cent from the top of your age group (not your Year 12 group).
Universities use the ATAR to help them select students for their courses and admission to most tertiary courses is based on your selection rank (your ATAR + any applicable adjustments). Most universities also use other criteria when selecting students (eg a personal statement, a questionnaire, a portfolio of work, an audition, an interview or a test).
