Positive Partnerships for Learning

The positive partnership between families and Rose Bay Secondary College underpins the high expectations and inclusive culture expected by our school community. We look forward to working together to provide the best possible outcomes for all students. In the same way as we treat nurses, doctors, front line workers, retail staff with dignity and respect, teachers and support staff also deserve the same behaviour. The Department of Education expects that all parents follow the guidelines and all communication is presented in a positive and constructive manner. The Department has a legal obligation to ensure our school is a safe place for both staff and students. This includes taking measures to ensure that the communication our staff receive is respectful and does not negatively impact on their wellbeing. We expect that communication at all times is:

  •       Polite and respectful.
  •       Focusing on relevant facts and possible solutions.
  •      Providing our staff with the information that is needed to resolve the issue or current concern.

Thank you for following these simple guidelines to ensure a positive partnership between families and school.

Book Week and Wear it Purple Success
Last week saw a successful book week with additional activities hosted by the library to promote
reading and engagement. We look forward to the award presentation this week for the winners of
the competition. Check out the Library News and school socials pages for images.

The plaza was awash with purple last Friday as the school celebrated Wear it Purple day with bands,
bake sale, sausage sizzle and our OP4Inclusion stall.

Year 11 Exams
Our Year 11 exams commence next week. The draft timetable is below. All students must be present
at the start of their exams. Delays in transport are not deemed reasonable grounds for misadventure
so the College advice is plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of exams.
This is an exam block ,so students only need to attend their exams, the rest of the time is to be spent
studying and reviewing their work.

Mobile Phone Ban. Term 4.
Over the next few weeks we will continue our explicit teaching of the expectations in the College
relating to digital devices. All carers will be emailed with specific information this week so you can
plan for this change. Below are the slides for our students:

IEF News

IEF H visited The Chau Chak Wing Museum. There are 443,900 items in the collection. The exhibits are History of the Ancient World, nature, animals, technology and sculptures. We liked the items and arts in the museum, but my favourite display was the LEGO Greece Pompei project. Evan

The IEF Garden, what's in season?

The IEF garden is bursting with produce, cauliflower, broccoli, snow peas, lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, and an abundance of herbs.

The IEF students are looking forward to using the produce in their Food Technology classes.

Op 4 Inclusion

Op 4 Inclusion, the IEF charity shop celebrated Wear it Purple day and set up in the plaza next to the bands. Hundreds of students rummaged and found bargains, it was an exciting day for the IEF where they could put their Design and Technology and Numeracy skills to work. All funds raised go to charity and keep the preloved clothes out of landfill. The IEF will set up the Op 4 Inclusion charity shop on Wednesday during the Battle of the Bands.

SRC News

It’s been a busy few weeks for the student body here at RBSC, with various academic and other events occurring around the school.

On Friday the 25th August, RBSC celebrated Wear it Purple day, a day about celebrating and fostering inclusion for LGBTQIA+ young people. Over the course of the day, a bake sale and sausage sizzle were held, bands performed and the IEF opened a special edition of their “Op 4 Inclusion” op shop. Thank you so much to everyone involved in the planning and running of this day, and for the school community for getting involved! With your help, RBSC raised over $600, which will be donated to Wear it Purple to help them continue their work in supporting LGBTQIA+ youth nationwide.

Looking forward, Week 7 will see the return of an annual highlight on the RBSC arts calendar, with Battle of the Bands taking place in breaks 1 and 2 on Wednesday August 30 and Friday September 1. Nine bands will be competing to claim the title of RBSC’s best band, and everyone is encouraged to come down to the plaza and support those competing. More announcements regarding Battle of the Bands will be coming soon via Sentral and the SRC Instagram page (@rbscstudentvoice2023), so make sure you're following it if you're not already!

Finally, a massive congratulations to year 12 for completing their trial HSC exams last week, and good luck to year 11, who will next week begin their 2 weeks of exams. Good luck as well to everyone in year 7-10 with your upcoming assessment tasks- make sure to study hard and look out for each other and yourselves.

Book Week 2023 Unveiled!

The unveiling of the Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year 2023 Award (#CBCA2023)
Winner and Honour Books last Monday by Acting Principal, Ms Archer and Teacher Librarian, Ms
McLelland, also launched a week of fun book-related activities and reading inspiration for students.

The Bob Bellear Memorial Library held a display of the new books and the winners from the different
categories of the Awards. Teachers from the English Department brought some classes down for the
students to view the new additions to the school’s library catalogue and have the different award
categories explained. The #CBCA2023 shortlisted books will remain on display over the following week
and will be available for students and teachers to borrow from Friday 1st September.

This was the first year in the history of the Awards that a Graphic Novel has won the ‘Older Readers’
category. Read more about this year’s winners in this Sydney Morning Herald article: Think comics
aren’t books? This graphic novel just won book of the year

The Library has also been overflowing with activity all week with students excited about the Book Week
activities on offer. Students have been getting super creative with their ‘Blind Date With A Book’ dates
and the Library team has been impressed with the standard of work and commitment.

The ‘Colouring-In Bookmark’ and ‘Create Your Own Bookmark’ activities have been taken up with great
enthusiasm with many of the students (including many Year 12s recovering from HSC trial stress!)
commenting on the calming effect. It’s been wonderful to see such a variety of students, of all ages,
benefit from this colourful mindfulness activity.

Ms McLelland and Year 11 student, Raven Carlton, hosted Book Trivia events during some school breaks.
This online Kahoot quiz was also attended with great eagerness. It’s been a joy to see the school
community get behind making this such a happy and busy Book Week.
These image collages will give you an idea of some of the Book Week fun enjoyed.

Core rules:

Maintain a neat appearance, including adhering to the requirements of the school's uniform or dress code policy. The Department of Education supports the waering of school uniforms by students and the upholding of high standards of dress by students and staff. A school uniform identifies students as belonging to Rose Bay secondary College. We expect students to wear the uniform with pride during school hours, while travelling to and from school, and when engaged in school activities out of school hours.

Students may wear any item from the Rose Bay Secondary College current uniform selections on any school day. Students will need to be in sports uniform for practical PE lessons and sports days.

Attention: Rose Bay Secondary College community

When RBSC first opened in 2003, secure full-height perimeter fencing was installed on the site boundaries at the front of the school and part-way down both sides. This was carried out by the Department of Education’s Asset Management Unit (AMU), which oversees such site maintenance and security. However, further fencing, around the lower side and back areas of RBSC grounds (below the oval), was never erected. It was deemed that any remaining sections could be completed at a later date, as required. In the meantime, the site would rely on the various fences of our neighbours to provide security and protection from unauthorized intrusions.

Such arrangements have proved inadequate, to the point where both school premises and students are currently exposed to an unacceptably high level of risk. The RBSC Executive and the P&C therefore believe it is imperative that full-height perimeter fencing is now installed, securely enclosing the boundary of the entire site.

The RBSC Executive has been closely monitoring the situation since the return to on-site education post-COVID. CCTV footage frequently captures unauthorized persons accessing RBSC grounds to walk their dogs, hold parties and picnics (each instance has been duly noted and logged with the Department of Education). This results in litter (including broken bottles) and dog faeces on the oval, as well as damage to the basketball areas (which have just been refurbished at great expense to RBSC and the P&C) and the oval. Each morning teaching staff inspect the grounds and clean up, rather than risk the OHS implications of exposing students to broken glass and dog faeces on the oval. This is not fair on the staff and a genuine hazard to our student population.  Further damage done by dogs includes potholes dug out on the oval and digging damage on the surrounding landscape and gardens. This poses a real danger to students playing sports on the oval, and costs a vast sum to repair – currently most of the $20,000 annual budget for the oval’s upkeep is consumed by repairs to turf and ground.

Over several years, neighbours have built unauthorized back gates into their fences. Whilst it is illegal to access school premises via such gates, it is clear that this is occurring. The RBSC Executive has written to all neighbours reminding them that unauthorized entry is illegal and requesting such practices cease and desist. To date, this has not been effective.

The AMU have informed the School Executive that funds are available to complete the remaining sections of fencing, but at the moment we are told it is just one item on a long list. We believe it is time for this issue to be made an immediate priority.

Until recently, nearby Waverley Public School had a similar combination of adequate/inadequate perimeter fencing securing the grounds. Despite concerns being raised by parents and staff, because it is located next to a police station and court house, the site was not considered to be high risk – until under-arrest suspected criminals jumped the fence into the playground and made their escape through the crowds of students. Waverley Public School now has full-height perimeter fencing securely enclosing the school! Similarly, RBSC needs to control its own security arrangements, and can no longer rely on the various fencing erected by neighbours. We do not seek to restrict any authorized and supervised access that poses no security risk, and we propose that all fencing erected will be inside the RBSC boundary. We will also request that the fencing around the side and back gates be heightened to deter students from jumping the fence on their way to/from school.

The potential risk of a ‘major incident’ is too great to allow the current level of unauthorized access to continue. We therefore seek support from the RBSC community to move forward with this proposal as a matter of urgency, and ask you to sign this petition:
https://www.change.org/Fully_Fence_RBSC

Yours sincerely,
The P&C Executive Committee
