Newsletter Term 2 Week 9
From the Senior Executive
Over this week and next we are celebrating our students' achievements at Year Assemblies. I had the pleasure of attending the Year 7 assembly and was impressed with the number of students being recognised for being respectful, responsible learners. Year 7 were also entertained by the Junior Dance Ensemble choreographed by Ms Gray and Eden. Thank you to all the work from the Year Advisors and Wellbeing Team for creating such a positive event for the end the term.
CAPA have had a busy couple of weeks with the Senior Dance Ensemble, Junior Dance Ensemble and the Company Dance Ensemble all performing at the IN THE SPOTLIGHT DANCE FESTIVAL at the Seymour Centre. The MEP's Concert Bands and the Rock Bands both performed this week showcasing their talents. Thank you to the CAPA and MEP staff for providing these experiences for our students.
Each year, RBSC holds the Michael Koutsoukis Memorial Public Speaking Competition in memory of English Teacher Mr Koutsoukis. The speeches were developed through the Local Hero unit of work in English, where students research a local person who has positively impacted their life or the community. The finalists Maya, Annie and Zahra gave highly persuasive speeches about why their local hero was the worthiest of a Local Hero Award. Congratulations to Hamish on his winning speech about his admiration for the person who taught him to cook. Hamish explored what that meant to him personally, how he can now cook for his family, how his family now buy local produce, and how buying locally can help the environment. Congratulations Hamish on a thought provoking and well delivered speech. A big thank you to Ms White and the English Faculty for organising the event and showcasing some of our very talented Year 7 speakers.
The weather is definitely getting colder, and I commend the students who are keeping themselves warm in the correct school uniform. We are a school that values our uniform, and we are supported by the majority of the students and their families. We have seen a rise in students arriving out of uniform and in particular concern, wearing inappropriate footwear such as Crocs and Ugg Boots. Uniform is about pride in the school but also safety.
Students and families in Year 8 and 10 were invited to our Subject Selection Information Sessions to support their elective choices for 2024. Each faculty put on display some of the learning experiences offered at RBSC. Students have been sent their codes to start the subject selection process. Please ask your student to see their Year Advisor for any technical issues. Please click on this link to see the information booklet.
Congratulations to all our cross county and sporting athletes in Mr Flack's celebratory post below.

Tafe Design Centre, Enmore
On Tuesday, IEF H orientated their way to TAFE Design Centre, Enmore. Here they were given a tour of the campus by Penny. Organised by Sue Tomasetti, Support Teacher, transitions, students were able to see the many activities that this TAFE offers.
The group, with students from support classes in other schools too walked through classrooms with small TAFE student groups working on Design courses. There were Design fundamentals courses, digital illustration techniques, wearable art being made, costumes and props for cosplay, film and theatre and a film crew from another TAFE campus filming some of the designs!
Figures for a TAFE float during the Mardi Gras parade were made on the campus and can be seen in the photographs from the day.
It was an excellent glimpse into the dynamic and diverse world of design education and showcased the range of opportunities available at TAFE, inspiring some students with new ideas and possibilities for their own creative careers.
Hyde Park Barracks
IEF H planned their trip using various websites, including Trip Planner to travel to the city by two buses and then navigated to Hyde Park Barracks using Google Maps. Originally constructed to house convicts, the Barracks has witnessed various transformations throughout its history, serving as an immigration depot, asylum, law courts and government offices.
A highlight of the visit was the hands – on exploration of convict life at the barracks. By trying on traditional costumes and ‘sleeping’ in a hammock, the students gained an understanding of the living conditions endured by convicts during that era. They explored themes of displacement and resilience through the experiences of convicts, migrants and Aboriginal people.
Students also participated in a hands-on archaeology program, allowing them to uncover the history of the Hyde Park Barracks and the individuals who resided there in the 19th century. This activity involved excavating, from sand, objects and artefacts, and learning about their significance during this period.
At the end of an exciting day, students enjoyed a hearty lunch at the Mint, a historical building that once served as the Royal Mint and was responsible for producing coins. The excursion offered an engaging and interactive experience and facilitated a deeper understanding of Australia’s past and diverse communities that have shaped its history.
Friendship Bakery Visit
IEF R and IEF H visited the Friendship Bakery in Vaucluse last Friday as part of their Work and Education Life Skills subject.
Everyone caught the bus and were greeted with hot chocolates and delicious muffins. Students then had the opportunity to look at the kitchen and see where all the treats were made. They learned about health and safety of industrial kitchens and saw the huge refrigerator which the trainee bakers use. The staff who worked there explained all about the business and demonstrated their roles, for example, the barista.
The visit to the Friendship Bakery left a lasting impression on the classes and they left with a great appreciation for the dedication and skill required to work in such a place. At least three of our students have been inspired to explore their passions and potentially future careers in the world of baking and hospitality.
