From the Senior Executive
Time to Celebrate and plan for success.
We are entering the season of reporting on your child’s progress over semester 1. Year 11 reports will be published next week. This is a good time to discuss with your child their strengths and celebrate their success. It is also a good time to support their self-reflection by encouraging thought around the following.
What is the common area to improve?
What is ONE thing I can do every day in my learning that will make a difference?
As assessment load grows, planning and visualising the process of completing work is important. Calendars, visual diaries and prompts to assist in chunking work are all simple tools that will support your child in completing task on time (or early) and ease some of the pressure and anxiety that a backlog of work creates.
There are a number of resources available for parents and the department of education also ahs a parents and carers page with resources.
Y-Safe Workshops
On Friday 26th May, students in Years 7 and 8 attended a workshop by Y-Safe, learning about online safety and wellbeing. The program covered: digital footprints, respectful online behaviours, how to take action to report inappropriate or defamatory content or interactions, intimate photos and the law, and strategies for managing wellbeing while online. Students were reminded about the importance of speaking out and asking for help from parents, guardians or a trusted adult, if they had any concerns about their own, or others, safety or wellbeing while online. Years 7 and 8 Year Advisers were impressed with the engagement and behaviour of all students who participated in these workshops and demonstrated outstanding respectful, responsible behaviours.
Year 7 Camp Review
Overall, our Year 7 camp was amazing. From the leap of faith to canoeing, nearly every minute was so much fun. During all of the activities we were pushed out of our comfort zone and challenged to try new things. With the help of our peers, teachers and instructors we were able to achieve our best. One of our favourite activities was the Leap Of Faith. We climbed up a tall pole, with metal pegs to climb on and jumped off the top aiming to grab the trapeze and swing off. Another activity we enjoyed was canoeing where we paddled around a creek playing fun games and trying not to capsize (flip the canoe over) or get wet! At night we played commando spotlight, a game where we hid from the teachers and tried not to get spotted, all in the dark. The aim of the game was to find as many hostages as we could without getting caught.

IEF News
Last Friday, IEF H and IEF R walked down to Rose Bay and caught the bus to Walsh Bay. We arrived at Barangaroo and everyone had recess by the harbour. Students learned about how the area used to be an industrial precinct and how it had been redeveloped and had become an area of urban renewal. Walking around Barangaroo Reserve we saw how natural elements had been incorporated into the urban environment and spotted native plants and flowers. We passed the new harbour swimming spot and the Cutaway. From here we saw the development area for the new Metro and a brand-new open park public space. We walked along the bars and restaurants and noticed the new energy efficient buildings built close to the wharf showing commitment to sustainability and environmentally friendly practices. After lunch at Bourke Street Bakery and Subway, a student led us back to a bus stop and we took two buses back to school.
Will, a former IEF student and IEF captain of 2021, has returned to Rose Bay Secondary College to teacher sport every Monday to the current IEF cohort. Will is now a qualified sports coach and works with public school After Care services. Will has a desire to see kids be the best that they can be, he gently encourages and leads by example. Every IEF student ran, jumped, played, passed the ball and enjoyed the 2-hour session with Will.
On Community Access in Darling Harbour, IEFM discovered a Pride Rainbow and knowing that June is Pride month they had their photo taken on the colours. Later they enjoyed had a healthy conversation about how important it is to support diversity.
MUSICAL ENSEMBLE'S PROGRAM - BATHURST BIG BAND BLAST CAMP
Senior Stage Band tour to Bathurst; hot jazz in a cool climate…
Over the weekend one of the MEP’s senior groups participated in a unique event for Jazz orchestras, the Big Band Blast, hosted in Bathurst by John Morrison. John is a renowned drummer and the brother of virtuoso trumpeter, James Morrison; both of whom share a passion for jazz pedagogy and practise. The event included fifteen groups from around NSW. Activities including workshops on improvisation, history, idiomatic interpretation, professional practice, instrument specific technique and a couple of fantastic concerts by the Royal Australian Navy’s Big Band and the NSW Conservatorium of Music’s Jazz Orchestra. All the students had a great time, learnt a lot about music and got a unique insight into life on a uni campus, staying onsite in one of the Charles Sturt residences (thin quilts, a bar fridge in every room and a sturdy lock on the food cupboard… good times!). The staff at the event all teach at major universities and it was great to see the improvement their guidance brought to all the bands. Thanks again to Emily Lawson and Bill Spyroulias for giving up their weekend to make this possible and to the school executive for their permission and assistance with this event. A huge shout out to Maria Alonzo for assisting with planning and admin and to the MEP committee for financial and logistical support.
Now repeat after me; “One, two, three, four, BEMBE, two, three, CLAP!”
Murray Jackson
The CAPA faculty would like to thank and acknowledge Murray Jackson for his superb organisation of the camp, conducting the band and all his hard work with the Music Ensemble's Program so that our students may have this wonderful opportunity. The students had a enriching time and learnt a lot of valuable lessons.

Model UN Seminars
Rose Bay's Model UN Team attended the inter-school Model UN program held at Cranbrook this week. All students performed admirably on the day and represented the College with distinction in all three sessions. Students firstly considered the international mental health crisis and the issue of cyber security as members of the United Nations Security Council, before splitting into teams to deal with the ongoing border crisis between China and India. Our students thoughtfully and meaningfully engaged with all of these extremely complex concepts and took on noticeable leadership roles throughout the day. Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week library event
The Bob Bellear Memorial Library team welcomed special guests from the Bellear family this week. Kali, Nikolette and their son, Year 9 student Tjara were shown the Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week exhibition currently on display in the library to commemorate these important dates in Australia's national calendar.
Acting Principal, Cathy Archer and Teacher Librarian, Margaret McLelland, formally welcomed the family, thanking them for their ongoing support to Rose Bay Secondary College through the library named after Kali's father, Judge Bob Bellear. Kali and Nikolette and their three children attended the school. Sadly, Kali's mother, Kaye Bellear, could not attend due to illness. We wish her a speedy recovery.
Judge Bob Bellear was the first Judge, as a First Nations Australian, to be appointed to the NSW District Court in 1996. Judge Bellear was passionate about equity in learning and the importance of reading, research and inquiry-based learning. To continue his legacy The Bob Bellear Memorial Library was officially dedicated by Linda Burney MP in 2007. The library acknowledges that First Nation’s people are the land's traditional storytellers.
