Newsletter Week 10, Term 4
From the Senior Executive
HSC 2022
An enormous congratulations to all of our RBSC students who have now completed their schooling, received their HSC results and ATARS where relevant. We are all so very proud of each and every one of you. Our gratitude is extended to parents and carers who have supported these students on their educational journey. As principal, I want to acknowledge our expert and caring teachers who have assisted our students to achieve their individual best results. We ranked 125 in the state this year, up 15 places from last year. We had an All Rounder in Matthew Cohen and 115 students achieved a Band 6 result. There are two additional super pleasing things about these results. We have pushed the number of students up who achieve either a band 5 or 6 and decreased significantly the number of students in the bottom two bands across subjects.
Rose Bay's Got Talent
What a lovely way to finish the term with a talent quest in the hall, organised by our senior leaders. We had the pleasure of seeing performances from comediennes, singers, piano players, dance and singing ensembles and Mr Waugh in a rock band! The atmosphere was electric and so supportive of all the acts. A new tradition has most definitely begun!
Staffing Update
Sadly we say goodbye to Mr Ray Payne, Mr Steve Waugh and Ms Irene Sha this year. They are all moving to new high schools and we thank them for the time they have spent educating students here at Rose Bay and wish them well in their future schools. Mrs Lim in the CAPA department will also be taking leave for the first three terms of 2023 and we wish her the best for her travels and adventures during this time. At the start of 2023 we will be welcoming Mr Rick Winter and Mr Paul Barreto in the TAS faculty, Ms Josephine Martin in English and Ms Min Kim in Mathematics, as permanent additions to our teaching staff.
We would like to wish all of our Rose Bay Secondary College families a Merry Christmas or a Happy Chanukkah or a Happy Festivus and a relaxing break till we see you again in 2023.
Message from the Student Support Officer
As we move into the holiday period we wanted to make you aware of the supports that are available to your young person when they are not at school. Changes to routine can be hard and your young person may experience times when they feel a range of challenging emotions such as sadness, stress, or lonely.
During the holidays we encourage you to check in/yarn with your young person. It can be helpful to let them know that you are available to speak with them if they ever need. You may also like to encourage them to stay connected with friends and family, look after their physical health and engage in the activities that they enjoy.
If you notice that your young person may benefit from chatting with someone, we encourage you to make them aware and support them to access services. This may be engaging with your local headspace centre, GP or access online or telephone supports through eheadspace (1800 650 890) or kidshelpline (1800 55 1800). Please note that you can also call these numbers to help guide your support, alongside parentline (1300 1300 52).
Academic Award Ceremony
On 13 December, Rose Bay celebrated the academic achievements of our students. Well done to all the receipents.
IEF Graduation
On Wednesday the IEF gave Toby and Nicholas a graduation extravaganza. We welcomed Ms. Bright, Ms. Archer and parents and friends, then the IEF performed their dance, Levitating. They had been practicing the dance with their Maccabi funded dance teacher Gabi Green and planned to have her lead at the Graduation. Gabi emailed that she has tested positive for Covid so we asked Evan Ryk to lead the students in the dance. Evan was magnificent and led the IEF through the dance beautifully. Next were speeches, then a trip down memory lane with images from the past 6 years on a Power Point, then the Graduation signed bears and the cutting of the cake. The Year 12 Year Advisors spoke and handed the graduates the yearbook and certificates. The big surprise was Santa who brought gifts for all, then IEF students sat down for a farewell feast. It was unanimous, Toby and Nicholas will be missed by all but we know that they are going on to bigger things.

Year 8 History Cake-Off
Yesterday the history faculty held a cake decorating competition between 8A, 8B, 8O and 8E. These classes brought in cakes and decorated them in the style of something from history - we had the Guillotine, the War of the Roses, the Women's Suffrage Movement, Pangea, the Inaugural World Cup and many more. An enormous thank you to Dayne for organising this day, and Lachlan McEvoy for being our judge! Thank you also to all the teachers and SLSOs who assisted or sat outside while the clean-up happened - these events are really enriching for our students and your flexibility and support is greatly appreciated.
Year 7 Selective GoIT Project
On Thursday and Friday of week 9, our year 7 selective students worked on developing their own apps. This enrichment activity asked students to create an idea for an app to improve their community. They then prototyped this app and pitched it to a panel of judges. Winston, a member of the winning team, outlines their app idea:
"Our idea was an easy-to-use hospital watch time app to help with the current hospital crises. The app included a live chat with doctors and specialists so you can do at home care as the majority of the people waiting in hospitals can be easily treated at home. It incorporated a precise map that tells people which is the closest hospital and how long you have to wait. The reason why we have a map is to evenly distribute the amount of people in hospitals as some hospitals have massive lines while others don’t. We got a review section for the hospitals so which the people can see how good quality the hospital is."
Rose Bay Raptors Winners
The Division 1 of the Under-14s in the City of Sydney Basketball Association featured the Year 7 Rose Bay SC Raptors against the KHY Apollos in the grand final. The Raptors initially trailed for most of the first half, but caught up to tie the game at 13-13 at half-time. In the second half, it was an exciting back and forth game with multiple lead changes. With a minute left, and both teams tied at 28 points, a go ahead fast-break basket put the Raptors ahead by two points. A desperate last second 3-pointer by the Apollos bounced off the side of the rim resulting in the win. After the game, the Raptors all received gold medals and were declared U14 Division 1 Champions.
Thanks to all the awesome players: Robbie, Connor, Jeremy, Obi, Leo, Geva, Ryan, Frank, Toby and Louis.
Thanks to awesome assistant coach Tomer.
More medals to come in 2023!! Hope to see all on the court again…
Student Achievement
Aliyah R (year 8) competed for NSW in the Australian Figure Skating Championships in Brisbane last month. Her team won, achieved a world record and will now be representing Australia at the World Championships in France in March, 2023. This is an incredible achievement after many early morning training sessions, focus and teamwork. Congratulations Aliyah! RBSC is so proud of you. We can't wait to hear how you go at Worlds!
