Class of 2022 - You did it!
The final HSC exam for the class of '22 finishes at 3.30pm this afternoon. You made it! We are so incredibly proud of you and wish you and your families all the very best as your time at Rose Bay Secondary College comes to an end. Good luck with your HSC results and futures but for now, relax, celebrate the end of your schooling safely, look after each other and thank you for the memories.
School Uniform
On occasion you may get a call from a member of the senior executive asking you to bring your child's school uniform up to school. We can't police every student every day, so we do ask for your assistance in ensuring your child wears school uniform each day. We would much prefer to spend our time helping students and families and ensuring fantastic educational opportunities for your child. Our parent community strongly endorses the wearing of school uniform and we have a very flexible range of items students can choose from. Please help us out!
Halloween
Last Friday was the SRC organised school Halloween. It was a great success, raising $328.25 for flood relief. We had lots of incredible costumes in all years and saw many of the teachers dress up too. At roll call, SRC members collected gold coin donations, and at recess there was a Halloween themed bake sale. At lunch we got to listen to the incredible bands Grapefruit, Rusty, Metal Club, Cowboys from Hell and Louder who all performed amazingly well. A big thank everyone who made this awesome day possible!
CAPA Update
As the year draws to a close, we would like to thank all of the amazing families who have supported CAPA across the course of the year. To those of you who have attended performances, sent thank you emails, driven students to late night shows, paid your elective contributions and put up with students rehearsing the same songs over and over, we thank you very much. Your support has allowed us to put on an amazing Cabaret, go on excursions and buy a range of wonderful new Visual Art and Music supplies (including a beautiful new piano that will arrive soon) and purchase new Dance and Drama props and costumes.
Thank you to all of our Creative and Performing Arts students who have been so willing to share their work throughout 2022.
Our students will continue to showcase their works and performances right up until the end of the year at various events including Presentation Night, Orientation Day and the MEP End of Year Performances.
We are holding a Dance and Drama night next Wednesday night (9/11), 6pm in the school hall. This evening will showcase work from elective Dance and Drama classes as well as extra- curricular Dance and Drama Ensembles. This is an opportunity for families to get a glimpse into the classroom with both polished performances and works in progress being presented. There is no cost to attend the evening. There will also be a small Visual Art Exhibition in the hall for all to enjoy on this night.
Finally, a big thank you to Cristina Garduno Freeman for donating two Cello’s to the Music Ensemble Program. They have been put to good use. We are so appreciative of your generosity.
Mathematics Acceleration Program (MAP)
Rose Bay Secondary College has trialled a Mathematics Acceleration Program (MAP) and successfully seen students from the Year 9 cohort complete Stage 5, Year 9 and 10 content, within the single year. This means that when they enter Year 10, they would have already completed all the year 10 course work and will begin the Year 11 Mathematics Advanced and Extension 1 course. Due to the success of the trial program in 2022, RBSC's MAP will again be offered in 2023 to students commencing their Year 9 studies.
Acceleration is based on the principle of compression of work, not omission of work. Students who accelerate must achieve the required outcomes of the courses, but in a shorter time frame. Students must be prepared to work diligently during their Mathematics lessons, complete homework on a regular basis and in some instances, complete holiday homework.
Participation in MAP is through invitation only to students completing Year 8, where the Mathematics Department will gather student data including previous NAPLAN tests, Best Start data, all previous in-school Assessment Tasks from Year 7 and 8 and an Overall Mathematics Knowledge Exam sat in Term 4. Based on this data, and in consultation with students’ Year 7 and 8 mathematics classroom teachers, a judgement will be made regarding suitable candidates for the program.
Accelerated students must be self-motivated and independent workers, have a mature work ethic and the ability to manage a high workload. Students must be prepared to ask for help from their teacher as required.
The schedule will run as follows:
Year 8 – Overall Mathematics Knowledge Exam to be sat in Term 4. Successful candidates will be invited to take part in the MAP.
Year 9 – Completion of the Year 9 and 10, 5.3 Mathematics course.
Year 10 – Completion of Year 11 Advanced and Extension 1 courses. This may require students to take part in before and/or after school classes.
Year 11 – Completion of Year 12 Advanced and Extension 1 courses. Students will sit their Advanced and Extension 1 Mathematics HSC Exams. Following the HSC Examinations, students must attempt the first Year 12 Assessment Task in Term 4 of Year 11 for both the Mathematics Advanced and Mathematics Extension 1 courses. This is to ensure that should a student elect to repeat either or both courses in Year 12, they have completed all HSC course assessment tasks. (Note: HSC courses commence in Term 4 and HSC results are not issued until after the end of the academic year, usually in mid-December).
Year 12 – Accelerated students have several choices when they are in Year 12. These choices should be made in consultation with the Career’s Advisor, the classroom teacher, and the Head Teacher of Mathematics. The options are as follows:
- Accept HSC results and do not enrol in Mathematics in Year 12. This is one of the main aims of acceleration. If a student considers that they will need to repeat, they should NOT accelerate in Mathematics.
- Accept HSC results and progress to completing the Mathematics Extension 2 course. This course work would begin in Term 4, of Year 11. This is another main aim of acceleration; to give students the requisite skills to successfully complete the Mathematics Extension 2 course.
- Attempt Mathematics Extension 2 and repeat Mathematics Extension 1.
- Accept Mathematics Advanced HSC result and repeat Mathematics Extension 1 course only. Students must also repeat Mathematics Advanced coursework, but not take the HSC examinations.
- Accept Mathematics Extension 1 HSC result and repeat Mathematics Advanced course.
The College may, at any time, withdraw an invitation to be part of the MAP through a student’s demonstrated lack of application and/or consistently poor performance. A student and/or their parents may elect to discontinue participation in the program at any time. This would mean the student will revert to the appropriate course and class within their academic cohort.
If you have any questions regarding this program, please do not hesitate to contact Lauren Broit, Relieving Head Teacher of Mathematics, for more information.

Year 9 Graphics
Year 9 Graphics students have recently completed a unit of work studying rendering techniques. A range of materials have been rendered using manual techniques and computer aided rendering techniques, the later featuring at the center of the page. Timber, plastic, metals, and glass are rendered using graphite pencils, pastels, Copic markers, Carbothello pencils, fine-liners, and more. The results are stunning, and the students have enjoyed the rendering unit immensely.
Cricket Report – 2022
After a year of wet-weather cancellations, the Senior Boys Cricket Team finally got out on the field against Kirrawee High School in the Davidson Shield on Friday of week 3.
Under sunny skies and on a lightning-quick outfield, skipper Marley won the toss and elected to bowl. Early doors, that decision looked like the correct one, as some accurate bowling and sharp fielding reduced Kirrawee to 5/75. However, some stiff late-order batting resistance and several missed chances in the field meant that our opponents managed to score 271 before being bowled out in the 38th over. Wickets were shared evenly with Liam taking 3/42, and Thomas, Marley, Ethan, Ilia, Riley, and Doug all taking 1 each.
Our chase started brightly as young guns Jamie and Joseph hit 56 in the first 6 overs before the wickets started falling. At the other end, Joseph continued to flay the ball to all corners of the ground until he was unluckily caught behind 1 run short of what would have been a well-deserved half century. Wickets continued to fall steadily, however an excellent partnership by Evan (Year 12), and Edward (Year 7) got us back in the game. At the halfway drinks break we found ourselves 6/136 needing another 136 off the last 20 overs. Unfortunately, Evan was caught shortly after drinks for a swashbuckling 43 that included 5 enormous sixes and Edward was the victim of an absolute blinder of a catch, which took victory almost out of reach. Some gutsy late order entertainment was provided by our young tail order, including Ethan (27), Ilia (17), and Zack (13) which enabled us to compile 214 before we were bowled out in the 36th over.
I would like to thank and congratulate all participants for being such fantastic representatives of the College. A special thank you to our Year 12s (Marley, Riley, Ilia, Liam, and Evan) who have represented the College with distinction since 2019.
IEF Garden
Paula Masselos the Waverley mayor and the Waverley Ward councillor, Ludovico Fabiano visited the IEF Hardy Street Harvest Garden on Saturday. The Mayor received a fresh garden produce basket that she picked fresh from the garden. The IEF students and teachers have been invited to the award ceremony to see if they win a place in the Waverley Garden Awards on 3 December.
Library News and Reviews
Finally we saw the sun this week and there was a new moon in Scorpio which meant that things may feel a bit topsy- turvy! Well I know it did for me!
With week three at an end and school Halloween celebrations over I thought a well written novel about a year 10 group of friends whose lives intertwine with family, friendship, feuds, crushes and the general day to day interactions that young adults encounter as they grow and develop at this important time, would be a perfect book to review.
“I am out with Lanterns”, written by Emily Gates, explores the themes of sexuality, friendship and identity through the lens of six teenagers. The characters are all encompassing and diverse and created with sensitivity and care. The gang includes both typical and atypical individuals, one who has autism, one with two moms, one who is a lesbian, one who is a bully. As their characters and interactions develop the importance of their firm friendship reflects the real world while allowing each reader to identify with someone and the challenges and issues they deal with.
This book is engaging and at the same time shines the lantern on the need for a strong sense of being and the need for a group to assist with self- identify and growth.
