Why Choose Public Education?
View from the Principal’s Desk
Term 3 always starts quickly with Regional and State representation events as well as key transition points for our students in Subject Selection and Trial and Preliminary exams.
To support this our College focus this term is sustained classroom attention and calmer playgrounds. We also at our opening assembly celebrated the selection of 15 of our Dancers into School Spectacular 2025.
Subject Selection
Year 10 and Year 8 will be choosing subjects for 2026 in the next week. I encourage all students to discuss with their families their choices and write down key questions so they can seek advice from their teachers and career advisor.
These choices are for 2 years so wise decisions are important.
Thank you for the positive feedback from last weeks Parent Teacher conferences. Years 8 and 10 will be held this coming Tuesday. I also appreciate parent understanding of the Timetable changes and so far we have had a smooth transition into the new timetable. I am focusing on Year 7 and 8 classroom visits so I can observe how classes are settling in with their new classes.

Check-in assessment for Years 7, 8 and 9
During Term 3, Week 2, students will participate in the Check-in assessment. The Check-in assessment is a NSW Department of Education online literacy and numeracy assessment available to support schools to assess and monitor student learning. The assessment can supplement existing school practices to identify how students are performing in literacy and numeracy and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs.
- The Check-in assessment will be scheduled from Wednesday, 30th July to Friday, 1st August
- All students complete a reading assessment and a numeracy assessment
Students need to bring:
- A charged laptop
- Headphones or earbuds that connect to their laptop
- A scientific calculator (the assessment platform provides an on-screen standard calculator for secondary students, but it is not scientific)

The Check-in assessment is a diagnostic tool designed to inform teaching and learning. There are no official reports for parents and carers. Please be advised that there will be no catch-up Check-in assessments for absent students.
IEF News

In the last week of Term 2, James had the opportunity to attend a Barista Training course in Surry Hills alongside a group of mainstream students – and what a day it was!
James thoroughly enjoyed learning the craft of making a range of coffee varieties, including cappuccinos, lattes, flat whites and long blacks.. The students had a wonderful time tasting each creation (until they simply couldn’t try any more!), making the experience both fun and delicious.
It was a fantastic day of hands-on learning, and we are so proud of James for giving it his all. Opportunities like this made possible by Georgia Bowd and Bill Spyroulias, help our students build new skills, connect with peers, and explore future pathways – and James embraced it wholeheartedly.
Well done, James!

Outstanding Achievements at the 2025 NSWCHS / NSW All Schools Cross Country Championships
On Tuesday 22 July, four exceptional students represented RBSC at the prestigious NSWCHS / NSW All Schools Cross Country Championships, held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre, Horsley Park. This event brings together the top cross country runners from across the state, both government and non-government schools, to compete at the highest level and potentially be selected for the NSW All Schools National Team.
We are incredibly proud to acknowledge the impressive efforts and results of our athletes:

- Billy C (15 Years Boys – 4km): 19th among government schools and 34th overall in NSW

A huge congratulations to Anastasia, Billy, Zoe and Tess on this outstanding achievement.

Model UN
Members of Rose Bay Secondary College's Model UN Team were lucky enough to attend MUNA - A Model United Nations Assembly, in NSW Parliament House on 7 June. The team debated 3 key resolutions over the course of the day: on nuclear proliferation in the middle east, combating the glorification of Nazism and neo-Nazism, and addressing global food insecurity.
Our three Year 11 team members, Doug K, Olivia S, and Aine G, were chosen to represent the United Kingdom on the day. The team was instructed to speak on the respective resolutions tactically alike to the position of the current UK government, and all other delegations were encouraged to do the same for their respective countries.
All 3 resolutions ended up passing, and had great quality argumentation and refutation, as all speakers had to adapt on the spot depending on the views of their allied delegations.
Overall the day was extremely beneficial and enjoyable, and the ability to meet like-minded students from other schools, learn how to build relationships, represent and argue positions that might not be their own thinking, and speak in the NSW Parliament’s Legislative Assembly, Australia’s oldest public building in continual use, was an amazing experience. The Rose Bay Model UN representatives, Olivia, Aine and Doug, would like to thank Rose Bay Rotary Club for their sponsorship and support of the program and making this possible.

Excursion to the Sydney Coffee School
On 2 July, Mr Spyroulias took 17 students to the Sydney Coffee School in Surry Hills for an immersive barista training experience. The students learned the art of making a wide variety of coffees while developing excellent listening skills and a deep understanding of the journey from bean to cup. The trainer, Trevor, was highly impressed — he said it was the best group of students he’s ever seen, all of whom are now ready to be employed as baristas.

Year 12 Geography Excursion to Darling Harbour
On 3 July, our Year 12 students visited Darling Harbour as part of their compulsory fieldwork for the Geography course. We explored Darling Harbour as our chosen urban place study, with students actively engaging in data collection and field observations throughout the day. Their participation was enthusiastic, contributing to a deeper understanding of the social, economic, and environmental dynamics of urban spaces.

Brainstorm: Verbal Combat (Year 9)

On Wednesday the 30th of July Brainstorm Productions will be presenting their student wellbeing performance ‘Verbal Combat’ for Year 9 students. Verbal Combat’ is a live theatre experience that explores issues such as (cyber)bullying, social media, friendships and mental health. This live performance highlights the importance of empathy, respect, assertiveness and self-compassion, and raises important questions about group dynamics, personal responsibility and the role of bystanders at school and online. The issues are unpacked in a post-performance Q&A and can be explored further in the classroom through a series of curriculum-aligned activities and lesson plans.
‘Verbal Combat’ is part of our student wellbeing curriculum and has been developed by education and mental health professionals. This engaging live show uses humour, audience participation, relatable characters and real student experiences to spark conversations and facilitate further learning in the classroom.
Brainstorm Productions is one of Australia’s most experienced and respected theatre in education companies, performing to over 260,000 students every year. They offer a range of programs to help schools nurture healthy and harmonious environments, addressing issues such as mental health, online safety, bullying and resilience.
