Executive Report

We began the week with a Smoking Ceremony on Monday morning to mark the start of Reconciliation Week. It was a respectful and meaningful event, well attended by our SRC and IEF students, and a powerful way to begin a week focused on truth-telling, respect, and understanding. We thank our student leaders and staff, particularly our First Nations Captain, Ari Segelov - Smith and Mr McNaught, for guiding this important work and helping to deepen our school’s commitment to understanding, inclusion, and respect.

Our Careers Expo Day last week was a fantastic event and a real highlight on the calendar. With over 25 stallholders in attendance, students in Years 10,11 and 12 had the opportunity to explore a wide range of post-school pathways and connect directly with industry representatives, training providers, and tertiary institutions.

It was particularly special to welcome back several ex-students, who generously shared their career journeys and offered valuable insights into life beyond school. It was great to see so many of our students asking thoughtful questions and genuinely engaging in planning for their future.

A big thank you to our Careers Adviser, Ms Georgia Bowd for their outstanding organisation and commitment to creating such a meaningful experience for our students.

Looking ahead, we are incredibly proud to have three teams—Years 7, 9, and 10—through to the Eastside Debating Grand Finals this Friday. Ari Papas, Christy Godby and Ian Godby attended the Semi Finals last Friday. “I had the pleasure of watching our Year 9 team in action recently as they argued the affirmative side with confidence and clarity. The convener gave very positive feedback, highlighting the team’s strong line and particularly effective rebuttal. It was a proud moment.” – Ian Godby, Deputy Principal

These moments reflect what we value as a school – Opportunity, Community, Achievement. Well done to all involved, and good luck to our debaters this Friday!

RBSC Debating Teams

Public Schools Survey

Throughout Wednesday-Friday students will be given the opportunity to respond to a survey about their experiences at school. This survey includes wellbeing, transition, learning and engagement questions. This survey replaces the Tell Them from Me instrument. We encourage all students to take part and respond thoughtfully so we can use this information to reflect on how we can enhance our instruction and wellbeing supports.

National Reconciliation Week at Rose Bay Secondary College

Rose Bay Secondary College began National Reconciliation Week with a Smoking Ceremony led by Eric Brown on Bidjigal and Gadigal land.

Eric shared a message of acceptance, caring for Country, and the importance of coming together as a community. The ceremony created a calm and respectful space for reflection and connection.

First Nations students, SRC representatives, and staff took part in the event, acknowledging the significance of the week and our shared role in reconciliation.

Throughout the week, a series of activities have been organised and led by our First Nations student captain, Ari.

We thank Eric for starting the week in such a meaningful way and for sharing his time and knowledge with our school community.

IEF News

This week, IEF 3 students continued to shine, demonstrating resilience and enthusiasm despite the challenging weather conditions.

In Geography, students successfully completed their research projects and PowerPoint presentations on their chosen Australian state or territory. They’ve now begun practising their public speaking skills in preparation for the upcoming IEF assembly. Their dedication and hard work have been truly impressive.

On Thursday, IEF 3 participated in the whole-school Careers Expo at RBSC. Students engaged meaningfully with various representatives, exploring a wide range of future pathways. There was particular interest in career opportunities with NSW National Parks, and several students showed curiosity about the fitness requirements for the police force, asking thoughtful and informed questions.

Well done to all students for their excellent effort and positive attitude this week!

Surf Life Saving Championships

Congratulations to Olly (Year 10) and Kelian (Year 11), volunteer patrol members of Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club, who recently achieved outstanding results in surf lifesaving competitions. As part of a team of four, they competed at the NSW State Championships at Freshwater Beach in early March, earning a silver medal that qualified them for the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships at Bilinga Beach on the Gold Coast where they won  a bronze medal in the U17 Champion Patrol event—an incredible achievement under challenging conditions.

From the club: It's fantastic to see you and your teammates involved in lifesaving events and competition. To place in the top three at the Aussies is something you should be really proud of.
We are so proud of you and all that you and the team have accomplished. You are an inspiration to us all, and
we look forward to seeing what amazing things you will achieve in the future.

Library News

This week is Reconciliation Week and with this in mind we have assembled a display of library books with themes based on First Nations' myths and legends and narratives with strong cultural content based on this rich heritage. One of the picture books featured in the photo above is "Finding Our Heart - a story about the Uluru Statement for young Australians". This was written by Thomas Mayor and beautifully illustrated by Blak Douglas. The blurb on the back of the book is "A book about understanding Australia's past, so we can have a shared future."This fits neatly into the theme of Reconciliation Week 2025 " Bridging Now to Next" which prompts Australians to look ahead and continue through truth-telling to push forward towards a more united and respectful nation, with past lessons as guidance.

This book display is at the entrance to the Judge Bob Bellear library and reminds all of our students of the importance of 'Bridging Now to Next".The display is adjacent to information about the valued link our school has with the Bellear family.  It was named in honour of a couple who modelled values and achievements that are integral to our school community's culture - compassion, commitment, inclusiveness and success through hard work and discipline - making a difference and helping others. The understanding that education is the driving force behind the achievement of these values.
