Newsletter Week 10, Term 2
From the Senior Executive
Academic Achievement
Reports are currently being proofed and all will be published at the start of next week. We are trialling a simpler and more transparent comment style to assist in the ease of understanding your child’s achievements and areas for further development. The outcomes and marking visual will remain the same. We will be seeking feedback on this new look format at the start of term 3.
End of Term 2
It has been pleasing to see the return of many of our enrichment activities for our students. Staff had a long day with their Year 12 students on the Geography excursion leaving at 6:45 am returning late in the evening. All participants spoke highly of the opportunities and experiences this excursion provided in enriching their studies.
The hall has been a hive of activity as tech, staging and rehearsal has been moving forward for our Cabaret performance in Term 3.
Our junior dances graced the stage at the Seymour Centre for the Dance Festival and were able to experience the atmosphere and camaraderie of the shared performance opportunity.
The winter term always has its challenges with seasonal illnesses and major assessments due.
As we move into the holidays we would ask that we all support our students to demonstrate our core values of being respectful and responsible in all aspects of their engagement in the community. We wish you all a safe and rejuvenating holiday break.
Antisocial Behaviour in Hugh Bamford Reserve
The school has recently been contacted by Waverley Council about reported regular night-time anti-social activities in Hugh Bamford Reserve bushland at North Bondi. It is dangerous for students to be near the cliff edge and students must stay out of all fenced areas at the reserve.
V-FEST and the Holidays!
The holidays are the perfect time to get together with a group of friends and shoot that short film you've been dreaming about. Here is a Shooting Checklist I've created along with the V-Fest 2022 Entry Form. See how you go, and I can help you with editing when we return in Term 3. Also follow V-Fest on FaceBook.
Year 12 Geography Excursion
On the 29th of June, the Year 12 RBSC Geography cohort, ventured into the coastal region of New South Wales to discover the historical heritage values of the Stockton dunes coastal ecosystem. From learning about Indigenous values, to contemporary management strategies and environmental sustainability, the excursion was both fun and educational! Both teachers and students were given the opportunity to bond over educational topics in a setting, outside of the classroom. Fortunately, students were assisted around the region by tour guides on a military style minibus, adventuring over the dunes and engaging with the Anna Bay sand dunes on a face-to-face basis. Overall, the excursion entailed educational enhancements, student bonding and an insight into coastal ecosystem ecology.
Junior Dance Ensemble
Last Thursday, after a long day, our Junior Dance Ensemble performed at the Spotlight Dance Festival with their "Back to School" routine. These students danced next to some of the best performing arts schools in Sydney and surrounds. They were very brave and danced extremely well, all while wearing a big smile on their faces!
Year 9 PHOM (Moving Image) and Year 11 Media Film Days
Over the last week, the students in both the Year 9 PHOM Class and the Year 11 Media class have been involved in a whole day shoot. In groups, the enthusiastic Film Students take their scripts, which have been developed over the last month, and interpret them visually. They all prepare shot lists, storyboards and pre-production schedules to make sure they capture all the footage required in ONE day, at Rose Bay. Having successfully filmed, the team then embarks on the process of editing, and hopefully their films will be screened at V-FEST later this year!
Visual Design Projects
What is Visual Design? It’s creativity. It’s Critical thinking. It’s functional designs where the aesthetics are just as important. Here are some of this term’s Surreal wearables designed by Year 10 Visual Design students.
Another Australian Selection!
Congratulations Year 10 student Tekiyah on his selection in the under 18s Australian youth soccer squad for the Maccabiah Games.

Library News and Reviews
Holiday time! R&R is the term bandied about and for me it means not rest and relaxation but READ and relax! So, what to read and how to access books in the easiest way? eBooks are the answer and here at RBSC Library we have almost 3000 titles in our eBook collection. These cover every subject and genre and we are confident that there is a book for everyone. They are also counted towards the competition to reward the three students who read the most books from RBSC Library for term three.
The consensus of most appealing books, from a sample group are the genres, mystery and suspense and fantasy and adventure. They keep one guessing, are generally fast paced, sometimes unpredictable and also, there is the unexpected twist. Three authors who come to mind that “fit the bill” are Anthony Horowitz, Rick Riordan and John Flannigan. All these authors write fast paced, easy to read page turners so once you begin, you will want to read to the end.
Anthony Horowit’s work is described in a Guardian review as “popular fiction at its most accomplished, purring along with the sleek assurance of an Aston Martin. All the ingredients of a cracking spy story are present ....” written in a fluid and flowing way.
Riordan’s writing style is fantasy- fiction and humorous. His books are full of great metaphors which assist the reader to “see” a rich tapestry of scenery and to really picture and get to know the characters. His books are full of humour and easy to read.
John Flannigan is an accomplished Australian author who wrote short stories, thrillers, originally to encourage his son to read. His passion developed as his son loved the stories and wanted more and more. Now a New York Times bestselling author he continues to write and enthral his audience.
Wondering how to access the eBooks? Click on the My School Library icon on your school home page, it opens in Oliver and you will find a banner, see below.
Click on show all items (on the right-hand side) and it will direct you to a drop-down list so you can select your book or author, without scrolling through all the titles.
Many of the eBooks are part of the Premiers Reading Challenge as well, so will count towards that. As usual a prompt about the Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC), which will end on the 19th of August. So only about two months left to reach your reading target of Twenty books, and as mentioned above the reading will count towards our new competition as well.
Happy Holidays and Happy reading to everyone from all the RBSC library staff.
